‘Just to the pub with some locals.’

‘Oh,’ he said wryly.

‘I’ll call you soon.’

‘Have a think about what I said.’

‘Yip, I will.’

‘Have a great night, sis. Love you.’

‘Love you too. Bye.’

Her head was spinning as she opened the door to Fergus. ‘Come in out of the cold. I’m almost ready.’ Except she wasn’t really, as Jack’s call had interrupted her. Fergus wore dark jeans, trainers and a black quilted jacket. Still casual yet smarter than his usual work gear. ‘I need to get something from the bathroom.’

‘Take your time.’

She disappeared for a moment and caught her reflection in the mirror. At least the fresh air had given her some colour in her cheeks. Either that or the fury she currently felt about Declan calling her brother rather than her. She quickly smeared on some pink lip balm. This wasn’t a date, she reminded herself. It was merely a casual get-together with friends. Who cared what she looked like?

‘Ready?’ He smiled.

‘Yes, I am.’ She grabbed her coat and hat from the hook by the door.

‘Oh, I almost forgot,’ he said, pulling a pair of gloves from his pocket. ‘Here you are. I meant to give them to you earlier.’

She felt the prick of tears at his kindness and the fact he’d remembered.

‘Thank you, Fergus.’

‘Well, it’s cold out there.’

‘You can tell me about Edie on the way.’

‘Sure. The moon’s high tonight, so shall we walk along the beach?’

‘Yes, that sounds like a plan.’

Chapter Thirty-Three

As Amelia walked along the shoreline with Fergus, she realised she didn’t feel at all guilty that she was with another man. After speaking to her brother, she actually felt really pissed off with Declan for being such a coward. Tension swirled around her stomach as she momentarily wondered if she should offload to Fergus.

‘Are you okay?’

‘Erm, yes, sorry, bit distracted. My brother in Boston called a few minutes before you arrived.’

‘I could have waited if you’d wanted to talk more to him?’

She shook her head. ‘Tell me about Edie. What did she say?’

‘Watch your step there,’ said Fergus, holding her arm and steering her over the pebbles.

‘Thanks . . . good I’ve got my sensible footwear on,’ she joked.

Fergus laughed. ‘I just said you were a bit worried about her, that we both were, especially since the night of the sleepwalking . . . and offered to take her to see Christine. That’s when she told me about the latest news from the hospital.’

Amelia exhaled, blowing her cheeks out. ‘Oh, good. I’d hate her to think I’d betrayed her confidence or was gossiping about her — particularly when she’s been so good to me.’

‘Don’t worry, she volunteered all the information and told me time is pressing. She did look relieved when I said I would take her.’
