Me:Just tell them a long, boring bedtime story.

West:I can read them descriptions from your decoration catalogue thing.

Me:Descriptions of tablecloths might do the trick. I’ll try to dig one out for silverware and plates.

West:By the end, will the dish run away with the spoon?

Me: And the cow will jump over the moon.

West:Now I need to get your cats a fiddle.

Me:Ugh, I’m too tired to be witty.

West:Good night, beautiful. I’ll see you tomorrow.

The morning after Zara’s wedding, I woke up with a smile on my face. The event had been exhausting and stressful—especially with her security team stationed everywhere—but in the end, almost everything had gone off without a hitch. Only one bridesmaid’s dress had needed altered, and the caterer hadn’t made enough fish dinners. Both problems I managed to solve just under the wire, making the wedding and reception look effortless to an outsider.

And while I was beyond thrilled that my business would probably get larger-sized weddings going forward, I was more excited about talking with West’s kids tonight.

Then there wouldn’t be any more hiding or sneaking around, and we could finally see how the four of us fit together.

Stretching my arms overhead, I grinned so widely it nearly hurt my cheeks. If I was going to clean up a little before West and his kids came over, then I needed to get my ass out of bed.

I just finished my shower and wrapped myself in a towel when someone pounded on my door, and Abby shouted, “Emmy? Wake up!”

The panic in her voice spurred me into action. I threw open the door, and my heart skipped a beat at the fear in Abby’s eyes. “What is it?”

“It’s Avery and Wyatt. They’ve run away.”

My heart dropped. “What?”

“This morning West found their note when he went to wake them up and discovered they were gone.”

“Do you know why they ran?”

I didn’t like how Abby hesitated.

“Abby. Tell me.”

“Well, Avery and Wyatt think their grandparents are going to take them away from their dad. So they ran away until they’re sure they don’t have to leave Starry Hills.”

I frowned. “Why would they think they’d have to leave?”

“According to Beck, the in-laws filed a custody suit, and West learned about it the day before yesterday. The kids must’ve overheard him and Beck talking about it.”

West’s distracted attitude yesterday suddenly made sense. “Why didn’t he tell me this?”

“He didn’t want to ruin your big day yesterday. And…”

Another damn hesitation.

“Abby.”

She bit her lip and then blurted, “Part of the reason they filed for custody is because they accused West of neglecting his kids to have sex with tons of women. But of course there’s only you, and it’s ridiculous, as he loves his kids.”

“What?”

“And it gets worse. Apparently, there are pictures and videos. Some might even be of you and him.”
