“Yes. They refuse to leave. Even if the King brothers could physically pick them up, it’d be a fight. They’re waiting to see you before they’ll leave willingly.”

“I’m on my way.”

I was on the outer edges of the Wolfe property and ran back to my parked car. Once inside, my heart raced as I drove as fast as I dared. I just wanted hug my kids, hold them close, and promise them I’d find a way for us to stay together.

The long gravel road to the farm meant I had to slow down. But as soon as I could park, I did, jumped out of the car, and raced toward the stables.

Amber King waited just outside and turned as I approached.

“Where are they?”

She motioned. “Follow me.”

I barely paid attention to the horses. My focus was on the voices coming from the far end of the building.

When we were nearly there, I picked up Emmy’s voice. “Your Daddy will never let you go, Avery. I promise he’ll do whatever he can to keep you close. But running away only hurts those who love you. Next time, just talk to him, okay? He’ll listen.”

Avery murmured, “I know. But we were scared.”

“And I get that, sweetie. I do. But the entire Wolfe family loves you and will protect you, no matter what.”

“And you too?”

“And me too.”

I finally reached the stall. Emmy sat on the hay on the ground, a kid to each side, hugging them close. Both Avery and Wyatt had their heads on her chest and looked exhausted.

And damn, the picture of Emmy comforting my kids did something to my heart.

Emmy noticed me and smiled, although I couldn’t miss the worry in her eyes.

“Avery, Wyatt.” They both looked up. I squatted down and held out my arms. “Come here.”

They ran to me, and I hugged them close, kissing each of their heads and simply enjoying the feel of them in my arms. They were safe, alive, and where they belonged—with me.

Emmy stood and made to leave but I looked up at her and caught her gaze. Something was definitely wrong. She looked sad, so fucking sad.

Then it hit me—Abby had probably told her about my in-laws’ lies and accusations. And knowing her as I did, she probably felt somewhat responsible.

Well, fuck that. After seeing her here, comforting my kids when we hadn’t even shared our relationship with them yet, had cinched it for me. I loved this woman, and I wasn’t going to let her run away so easily.

Standing, I brought my kids with me. Then I reached out an arm, gently grabbed her wrist, and tugged her close. “Come here.”

She hesitated and then moved closer. As soon as I could, I brought her into our hug. My kids didn’t even hesitate, each hooking an arm around her, and I pressed my cheek against hers. I whispered, “Stay with us. Please.”

After a beat, she moved to rest her head on my shoulder and nodded against my neck.

As I stood there with my kids and the woman I loved in my arms, I knew what I wanted for my future. And I was going to fight like hell to make it a reality.

ChapterForty-One

Emilia

It’d taken me a while to remember how much Wyatt talked about the King stables before I thought of searching there. The walk was easily doable from my place, and Amber had ensured her brother, Max, was there to help us, in case the twins were hurt.

The second I saw Wyatt and Avery playing cards on the floor of a horse stall, I nearly sobbed with relief. They were safe.

And yet, I knew I needed to keep it together for their sake.
