Wyatt and Avery both nodded and said, “Yes.”

West hugged Wyatt against his side. “Come on. You both need to apologize for breaking into the stables, and then we’re going home.”

Avery still clung to my side as we followed. The kids both murmured their apologies, and soon we were all inside West’s car—I’d come back to get mine in the morning.

By the time we reached the Wolfe house, the kids were sleepy. Since they’d eaten sandwiches for dinner already, West and I helped them get ready for bed. Once they were tucked in, I turned to leave and let West say goodnight when Wyatt spoke. “Aren’t you going to say goodnight to us, Emmy?”

His request touched my heart, and I went over to his bed. “I don’t know what to do.”

Wyatt smiled shyly. “My dad still kisses our foreheads and tells us goodnight.”

I brushed hair from the little boy’s forehead, kissed him, and whispered, “Sweet dreams, Wyatt Wolfe.”

He nodded. “That’s good for the first time. It’ll be nice when you can join in our stories all the time, though. Then you’ll do even better.”

My lips twitched. “I’ll work on it in the future. I promise.”

He took my hand and squeezed. “I hope you’ll be our mom now.”

I blinked back tears. I couldn’t exactly tell him it was still early in the relationship and West might get tired of me. But for now, I merely touched his cheek. “Just go to sleep, okay? We can all talk more tomorrow.”

He nodded. I moved to kiss Avery goodnight, and she whispered, “I hope you’ll be our mom too.”

Close to tears, I merely pet the cat sleeping next to her and went to the doorway. Once West finished saying goodnight to his kids, he shut the door and turned toward me. He pulled me close, and I didn’t even hesitate to snuggle against his warm chest.

He murmured, “Thank you for today, for finding them.”

I looked up and shook my head. “Don’t thank me. I was worried, so worried, and I’m just glad they didn’t get far.”

He kissed me gently. “And I meant it before when I said I love you, Emilia. No matter what happens next, we fight it together, okay?”

For a second, I worried about what could happen if I stuck around, how his in-laws might twist what we had into something sordid.

But the love glowing in West’s gaze wiped away all those fears. Or at least, most of them. “Together. Because I love you too.”

He kissed me, slow and tender, until he eventually pulled away. “Stay with me tonight. I’m too tired to do anything but sleep, but I want to hold you in my arms, Emmy. Please stay.”

“Yes, I’ll stay.”

The happiness in West’s gaze made my stomach flip. He truly loved me, flaws and all.

Soon we were settled in his bed, my head on his chest, and the exhaustion of the day settled in. There was so much to talk about in the morning. But for now, nothing could beat falling asleep in the safe, strong arms of the man I loved.

ChapterForty-Two

Weston

Iwoke up to light streaming through the window and a soft, warm figure snuggled against me. I breathed in Emmy’s warm, womanly scent and sighed.

She loved me. And despite all the reasons my past had made me wary, I believed her and loved her too. I simply couldn’t imagine my life without her. And seeing her say goodnight to my kids? Fuck, it’d made me love her even more.

The last threads holding me back, the cynical bastard inside me who’d been hurt by Andrea, had dissolved last night. Emmy would never be like my late wife and think that Avery and Wyatt were a burden instead of a joy.

The only thing standing in the way of the future I wanted was my fucking in-laws.

Emmy stirred. Her back was against my front, and her soft ass cradled my morning erection. Even though I burned to make love to her, I simply held her. As soon as we left this room, I’d have to face the reality of the custody battle. But I deserved a few minutes of peace and happiness first.

When she wiggled her bare bottom against my dick, I groaned. “Tease.”
