She nodded. “If it means we can play over here all summer, I promise to follow the rules.”

I glanced at Wyatt, and he nodded. Nothing else.

Abby gently bumped her shoulder against mine. “Well, we won’t be at dinner again tonight. Maybe tomorrow, but I can’t guarantee it. Millie has a big wedding expo event thing to go to soon, one Beck is probably going to as well, so she’s been planning for it in her free time.”

“Well, Beck always makes enough food to feed an army, so whenever you can drop by would be great. Avery and Wyatt will miss you.” I couldn’t quite bring myself to say I missed getting to know my sister a little better too.

“I’ll text you.”

I groaned. “I’ve never texted so much in my life as I have in the last few months.”

“Well, get used to it. I guarantee one day you’ll get addicted to our family group chats.”

“I doubt it.”

Abby merely shook her head and turned to my kids, hugging each of them again. “I have to get back to work, kiddos. Remember to check in when you get here in the morning, okay?” Avery and Wyatt nodded. “Love you both, and I’ll see you tomorrow!”

Abby waved and rushed off. I could hear noises coming from the barn, and I assumed it was the reception after the ceremony.

Not wanting to see anything related to a wedding, I herded my kids toward the path home. As they chatted about what they’d found today near the creek and what else they hoped to find tomorrow, I went through everything that still needed fixing on Emilia’s land. I’d noticed how anything beyond her home and renovated barn was somewhat neglected. It shouldn’t be because of funds, unless her brother had truly abandoned her.

Not like I’d ask if she had the money to do it. Besides, me repairing things was far better than the winery shit my brother often had me do. I wouldn’t shirk work again, but maybe on my days off I could fix things up for Emilia.

Only because it made things safer for my kids. Yes, for that reason only and none other.

ChapterSix

Emilia

Aunt Lori:We miss you! Come to dinner tonight. Sabrina and I need more women to even out the numbers.

Emilia:lol. You can handle all the Wolfe brothers, no problem.

Aunt Lori:Just because I can doesn’t mean I want to. I’ll bring out the ’16.

Emilia:Not fair! That’s my weakness.

Aunt Lori: I know.

The days flew by in a blur. I had so many bookings this year, it was insane, and when I added preparing for the upcoming wedding expo event and the Summer Star Festival, I pretty much didn’t do anything but sleep, eat, and work.

I’d started to miss the Wolfe family dinners, though. So much so, I was determined to walk back with Avery and Wyatt today and force myself to take a break.

So when they swung by the house around four o’clock, I gave them each a hug—like I did every day—and then said, “I’m going back with you two today. Hopefully, Beck will have enough food for me at dinner.”

Avery rolled her eyes. “Of course he will. Uncle Beck makes so much, it’s crazy. Daddy alone eats enough for two people. But then he’s been really busy and needs all the food so he can keep going.”

I hadn’t seen much of West since the day I’d stormed off nearly three weeks ago, when he’d brought up Rafe. Once or twice he’d been with the kids when they came to say goodbye to me. But apart from small talk, we’d kept our distance. “Is he busy with rebuilding the bottling facility?”

A few months ago, a crazy man named Justin Whitmore had been out to destroy Beck’s girlfriend and had hired someone to set the place on fire. The town had come together to try and get it rebuilt as soon as possible, although it was still a work in progress.

Avery shook her head. “No. Daddy’s been fixing things for you when he’s not working for Uncle Beck, like today.” Her eyes widened as she slapped a hand over her mouth. “I wasn’t supposed to tell you that.”

“What’s he fixing?” She hesitated, and I shrugged. “You’ve already told me some, so you may as well tell me the full truth.”

She shifted her feet before finally saying, “He’s fixing fences, the outbuildings, and a bunch of things. Just in case you want to use them or maybe bring the cows back someday. I told him me and Wyatt could help with a cow mama and her baby. But he said it’s too much work, and we have our kitties to take care of anyway.”

“How long has your dad been fixing things?”
