The two men growled at each other, and I tried not to laugh. Even as adults, brothers could act like children.

Aunt Lori clapped until she had our attention. “And since Beckie is taking Abby away from you, Millie, West will help set things up for your booth too.”

Being alone with West without his kids, even in a room with other vendors, was something I wouldn’t risk. “There’s no need. I can do it all myself. I have before.”

Abby snorted. “Just accept his help. This event is bigger, and I’d wager everything I own that you’d struggle to get everything put up by yourself in time.”

I could hire someone from Starry Hills to do the setup, but that seemed extreme. After all, West helping for an hour or two a day wasn’t going to be a big deal. I’d be too busy getting things decorated to care, let alone notice his muscles flexing as he worked.

No.I was definitely not going to think about his muscles. “Fine.” I looked at Abby. “But you owe me, big time.”

Abby shrugged. “I’m sure by now we’ve both racked up favors and are pretty even. Besides, you know I can’t talk about weddings like you do. You’re the magic behind your business, Millie. Not me.”

And just like that, I couldn’t stay mad at her.

I bumped my shoulder against hers. “Just pack a few extra bottles of wine for us to enjoy, and we’ll call it good.”

“I’d do that anyway, so deal.”

Talk turned to Sabrina’s latest clients, the twins’ recent salamander discovery, and Zach’s suggestions for the Fourth of July barbecue, which always included crazy competitions and games. Since it usually had like forty or fifty people attending, it was no joke.

All the while, I snuck a few glances at West, but he merely scowled and avoided my eye. The only time his expression softened was when one of his kids started talking to him and asked questions.

Well, if he was pissed off because he’d been ordered to help me, then he could take it up with Beck and Aunt Lori. I wouldn’t ask him to do much, only the bare minimum. And with any luck, our booths would be on opposite sides of the room.

The only downside was that we’d be staying in the same hotel. I’d have to do my best not to bump into him, if possible. Because if we were alone, and he continued doing nice things for me like fixing up the calving barn, then I might want to do something stupid, like kiss him.

And that would be a disaster, no question. The Wolfe family was my family, but if it ever came to them choosing between me and West, they’d side with West. And since I’d lost most of my family already, I’d be damned if I did anything to jeopardize what I had with the Wolfes.

So I’d be polite with him—he’d earned that much from me, after doing the repairs—but nothing more.

Weston

Zach:My offer to give you charm lessons still stands.

Me:

Zach:See, you definitely need my help. And you probably think you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but I think that’s bullshit. I believe in you, brother.

Me:

Zach:Even Avery could give you some lessons. If she didn’t look so much like you, I’d wonder if she was yours.

Me:

Zach:Sigh. And I was just trying to help.

Me:Fuck off.

Zach:He speaks!

Me:Fuck. Off.

Zach:I have a lot of work to do. But don’t worry, I’ll definitely find you later and impart my wisdom.

Me:
