Abby: x3

Me:You once told me not to ask questions until you were ready.

Abby: You’re right. I’ll contact the restaurant. Dinner’s at 6:30pm

Me:

Abby:Oh, don’t think I won’t try again later. But not tonight.

Me:Fine. But even if you push, I don’t have to answer.

Abby:We’ll see, my friend. I know just how to push your buttons.

Me: And I know how to resist you.

Abby:That sounds like a challenge.

Thankfully, West hadn’t tried to strike up another conversation in the car or even in the hotel. He’d merely called his kids while I showered, changed, and gathered my stuff before leaving.

I wanted to ask how they were, but I was afraid to talk with him again so soon after the blow up on the trail.

Well, blow up and then make-out session. One that still made my cheeks heat whenever I thought about it.

And if he so much as smiled at me, I might be reckless and try to kiss him again.

So yep, I was a coward and fled as soon as possible, arriving early at the restaurant. Since work was a good distraction, I replied to some emails as I waited for Abby.

Eventually, someone knocked on my window, and I jumped. Abby raised her dark eyebrows at me.

After grabbing my purse, I opened the door, and she didn’t waste time. “Why are you hiding out in your car? I’m early, which means you’ve been here even longer.”

“I wasn’t hiding. I was working.” Abby looked unconvinced. Damn her knowing me so well. “Well, it doesn’t matter. I didn’t really eat lunch, so I’m starving. Let’s head inside.” I glanced around. “Where’s your friend?”

Abby waved a hand in dismissal. “I made plans with her for tomorrow instead.”

“Abby…”

“Don’t ‘Abby’ me, Emmy. Something’s up. And since you were always there for me after the Epic Douchebag Disaster, I’m going to be here for you as well. You need me.”

“You got all that from a few text messages?”

“What can I say? I can read between the lines of yours by now.”

I bit my bottom lip. I felt bad that she’d changed her plans for me. And yet, a little relieved because out of everyone in the world, I told Abby the most.

West was catching up when it came to knowing more about me, but I didn’t want to think about that right now.

“Fine. Then let’s get inside and order first, and then maybe I’ll answer your questions.”

“Oh, Emmy, you poor thing. You still think you can resist me? I’m a pro at getting what I want with family.”

She grinned, and I snorted. “You’re definitely the youngest.”

“You’re the youngest, too, so way to throw shade on yourself.”

I stuck out my tongue, and we laughed. And for the next little while, the tension and tears and kisses with West faded away.

Except I knew it wouldn’t last. As soon as we finished ordering, Abby leaned forward and said, “Spill.”
