A commanding look from Blackmore silenced the protest. The feeder’s red lips turned down in a pretty pout, and she lifted her right hand up to Blackmore’s mouth.

Every cell in Leah’s body shouted at her to leave. She didn’t want to watch this. She’d seen vampires feed in training videos, drinking from unwilling humans. This was the first time she was seeing anyone offer their blood.

Blackmore’s icy gaze trapped her in place. The woman threw back her head and moaned when he bit her wrist. At first, Leah thought she needed help. Then her brain caught on. The woman was enjoying it. It was a moan of pleasure. Of need.

Her hands fisted behind her back. Blackmore licked close the wound after he was done. Leah resisted the urge to touch her own wrist, wondering what his tongue would feel like on her skin. His arched brow told her he guessed her wayward thoughts.

When the feeder swayed on her feet, Leah snapped her gaze away and helped the woman to the other side of the bed, while Blackmore fed on the second feeder.

“Are you new?” the woman asked, her voice weak but her tone disapproving. “There’s an order to these things, okay? You can’t jump ahead of the line.”

“No, I’m not a feeder.”

The woman didn’t seem to believe her. She pushed away from Leah and crawled onto the bed on all fours toward Blackmore. When she reached him, she wrapped her arms around his waist and planted kisses along his shoulder.

Leah scowled. She had no reason to feel jealous when he didn’t push the woman away and continued feeding.

“I’m leaving.”

“No.” His command froze her in her tracks. It was a stark reminder of his vampiric power. Blackmore stopped feeding and peeled off the first woman as if she were some annoying bug. “Leave.”

The woman huffed but didn’t argue. Leah didn’t blame her. It was hard to argue with someone who emanated menace the way Blackmore did. Clinging to each other, the pair stumbled out of the room.

When the door closed, she whirled around. “If you didn’t want them, why make them attracted to you?”

“Make them?” His gaze narrowed to thin slits when he caught on. “I don’t make them do anything.”

“Right.” Leah drew out the word in disbelief. “They want to give you blood and have sex with you of their own free will.”

He was suddenly in front of her. Leah took a step back. He was too big, too raw, too male. “For your information, feeders are paid extremely well, better than you, in fact. If you want a raise, maybe you should switch careers.”

“Money is no use if you’re a vampire’s slave.”

His expression darkened. “They’re not slaves. They sign an at-will contract like you, and we pay for their C2 implants. They don’t do anything they don’t want to.”

Was he telling the truth? His closeness made it hard to think. Her every nerve ending stood on its end as his finger trailed up the side of her neck. Her eyes zeroed in on his mouth. Leah licked her lips, recalling what the feeders had interrupted.

“No.” It took every ounce of strength for her to step away.

Blackmore blinked, surprised.

If she said yes, they would be in bed. But then what? There was no guarantee he wouldn’t use her and ditch her like he did the feeders.

No, her mission was to seduce him and keep his interest for three months. Sleeping with him on the same day she met him wasn’t smart, regardless of what her body craved.

“No,” she repeated, gaining strength from the word. “Take me back to the Central Tower. I have a long day tomorrow.”

It was the truth. Tomorrow was her first day on the job. While Blackmore had the luxury of sleeping the day away, she didn’t. Her duties involved dealing with humans who worked during daylight hours, not vampire ones.

His expression blank, Blackmore nodded. “As you wish.”

Julian looked up when his computer beeped. “It’s time for your ten o’clock,” Tristan said.

The reminder was unnecessary. He’d been doing his best to focus on the construction details of the third vampire club in the city’s south side while failing to dismiss Leah’s imminent arrival from his mind.

Julian turned off the screen and made his way to the conference room. The last few days, he’d stayed away from Leah. He didn’t need a repeat of the night at the club. It had been too close. He’d been playing with fire, letting her touch him and testing his control.

Asking her to become a feeder.
