His friend laughed and waved off Julian’s warning. Once the doors closed behind Marek and Bryan, Julian crossed his arms and leaned against the desk. “What do you want, Felix?”

His gaze strayed to Leah. She wore a black pencil skirt that hugged her figure with a light purple blouse tucked in, which matched the raspberry lipstick. He imagined peeling off her clothes inch by inch and kissing every part of her. Would she pretend to like it? He clenched his jaw.

Fuck. She’d clearly been faking it last night, but he still couldn’t get her out of his thoughts, or stop his body from raging out of control.

“Certainly not what you want.” Felix wagged his brows.

Julian should snap his neck for his insufferable smugness. He took a deep breath to calm the violence. “Be quick about it. I’m busy.”

“Fine, fine. I want to room with Gabby. Miss Davis won’t grant my request.”

“Is that all?” Julian was sure Felix was understating things.

“I refused because it sounds like Gabby doesn’t want to room with him. I’m not forcing her,” Leah explained, anger lacing her voice.

“She won’t do it unless you tell her to, since you’re herbossand all.” Felix couldn’t have said it more suggestively.

He was torturing Julian on purpose, though Julian supposed turnabout was fair play, considering the hundreds of times he had taunted the other man.

Julian shot him a quelling look. “Get out. I’ll talk with Leah alone.”

Felix rolled his eyes. “Fine.” Telepathically, he added,I like her, by the way.

Go to hell.

Felix chuckled. This’ll be a fun week. For once, I won’t be the only one suffering.

“Give him what he wants,” he said once they were alone.

Leah stiffened, fury wafting off her in waves. Her pursed lips and expressive face said everything he needed to know about her feelings regarding his decision. He knew what she would say even before she uttered the word.

“No.”

Julian stalked toward her like she was prey he’d set his mind on capturing. Her eyes widened as his power filled the room. Anyone else would’ve tried to run in the other direction. Not Leah. No, she stood her ground and tossed her chin at him.

You stupid, brave woman,Julian thought. If he were any other vampire, she’d be dead several times over for her rebellious nature.

“You won’t bully me into changing my mind,” she said, her tone barely civil.

“I’m your boss. I can overrule you.”

Her spine stiffened, but she didn’t back away when he stopped, mere inches between them. He thought she might claw at him like a wild cat. That brought another image to mind, one of her writhing with wanton abandon. If he picked her up now and took her to his bedroom, what would she do?

“Then overrule me. Since it doesn’t matter what this Gabby wants.”

A flash of vulnerability shone in her hazel eyes. There and gone for a second. Something about this situation had hit a nerve with her. Did it have something to do with what happened last night?

He could overrule her, but he hesitated. If he explained things to her, would she tell him the truth about last night? Even though his brain said she’d been playing him, his gut insisted he’d missed something important.

He stepped away from her, or he might give into the urge to kiss her. “Does it help that Felix and Gabby are mates?”

Her mouth opened, then closed, then opened again. “Mates? Did you say mates?”

“Yes.”

“Wait.” Julian relished the moments when she was shocked speechless. “Vampires have mates? What does that even mean? I thought you guys are-”

“Heartless, soulless demons?” Julian responded. That was the line used by the Organization in all its propaganda.
