“Thank you.”

“Are you aware why I hired you, Ms. Davis?” Blackmore’s discerning gaze studied her like she was the prey he’d been tracking for the last hour. When it landed on her breasts, she imagined his wicked mouth on them. The thought sent a shaft of pleasure straight to her core, and all he had done was look at her.

Get your shit together. She mentally wrung her hands to shake off the nerves.

“Yes.” Her voice came out husky. She had to get out of here before she embarrassed herself. Blackmore had to know his effect on her.Asshole.One day, she’d wipe the arrogant smirk off his face. “I’m to prepare the city for the diplomats’ arrival for the Gathering. Anything I should keep in mind?”

“Nothing. I’m expecting spectacular work from you, Miss Davis. I don’t like to be disappointed.”

She cocked her head. If he meant to scare her, he didn’t know her very well. Having moved past the initial shock of meeting him, she gathered the same confidence that had landed her the job at the senator's office. “You won’t be disappointed.”

He nodded. “Good. Clement will show you the ropes.”

With that, she was dismissed as Blackmore’s focus turned to his empty desk, ignoring her.

Leah exited the room with Clement and let out a slow breath. All things considered, it went well. Yes, her body burned with an unfamiliar fever, and she couldn’t wait to relieve the ache between her legs.

But she wasn’t dead.

That was a good start.

Only four more weeks to go. Leah squared her shoulders. She could do this. She’d lived through worse.

Chapter Four

Hewasgoingtokill Alistair.

A soulmate.

A fucking soulmate.

Alistair had to have known. The Vampire King knew everything, even the future, most of the time.

That explained why Alistair had picked Leah for this job.

Julian gripped the edge of the table, making deep grooves in the wood, as the woman left with Clement.

Fuck. When he’d seen her, his control had shattered. Her very presence had cracked the ice inside. Even with her gone, his body raged out of control. All he could think about was her. Her honeysuckle and cinnamon scent wrapped around him, tempting, seducing. It would be so easy to make her his.

It was a miracle he hadn’t claimed her right there as his body and instincts demanded. Thank the gods he’d stopped, saved by a strength of will honed in his thousand years of existence.

Damn it!He would not let fate dictate his life. For more than a thousand years, he’d lived by his own rules. No fucking way was fate changing that.

The longer she stayed, the harder it would be to resist the mating call. Though she was gone, down to her room somewhere, he could still sense her. Her soul, warm and pure and innocent, seared his insides, reaching that deep, empty hole where his soul should be. Where his soul would return if he claimed her.

It would be simple. All he needed was to drink her blood to complete the mating bond. His fangs lengthened with the possibility. She would taste divine. She wouldn’t even resist. He’d make sure she enjoyed it.

His cock twitched at the thought, at the ecstasy on Leah’s heart-shaped face. Once they were mated, she would be at his mercy. He would pleasure her until they both couldn’t move, until she begged him for more. There would be no more ice.

His soul would return.

Julian was halfway across the room, his body making up his mind, when the sane part of him shouted. No! Stop!

Felix had found his soulmate, and it hadn’t ended well. He continued to suffer, after six hundred years, chasing after a woman who’d rejected him. And for what?

A soul?

Julian scoffed. His friend should have known better. Who needed a soul? It was a distraction he couldn’t afford. Killing was easier when he didn’t have a conscience.
