Chapter Eight

Asconsciousnessreturned,Oliviastruggled against the darkness and the heaviness in her limbs.Wake up. Wake up, damn it!

With a loud gasp, she snapped her eyes open. Familiar beige walls. The beeping of the EKG machine. A bed with white sheets and a prone body.

She was back in Betsy’s room.

What? How?

Discordant memories jumbled together in her brain. Someone had knocked her out. She’d been getting coffee and a snack. A man and woman had approached her and said Zylotech had sent them to save her. When she didn’t want to go with them, the man had grabbed her. She’d seen Marek coming toward her…

Marek!

She tried to jump up, but her body wouldn’t cooperate. The best she could do was inch forward and push herself to her feet.

Her hand clasped tight onto the chair’s arms as her vision swam. She blinked a few times and waited until she was certain she wouldn’t fall flat on her face.

She heard his voice, urgent, rising, and annoyed, coming from the small, connected bathroom.

Slowly, she crept forward with the wall for support, not because she wanted to be sneaky, but because she really couldn’t move fast.

“I couldn’t let them take her,” Marek scoffed with annoyance.

Were they talking about her?

A garbled response she couldn’t make out.

“Yes, I know. I was alive the past hundred years, in case you forget,” Marek said wryly. “Don’t worry so much or you might be the first vampire to get wrinkles.”

Olivia still couldn’t hear the other person’s response, but the tone wasn’t very appreciative. Marek laughed, the deep rumbling sound sending wrong signals to her brain.

“I’ve got to go. Let’s talk again when I’m back in Vegas.”

Her eyes scrunched together. Vegas? The Vampire City? Was that where he was from? She’d been right. The attack on Zylotech had been orchestrated by somewhere high up. On the heels of that thought came another.

Was he finally leaving her? She should jump for joy, or at least metaphorically, because her body wasn’t quite up to the task. In reality, her stomach dropped to the floor with disappointment.

Stupid. She had no reason to miss him. He had kidnapped her, for God’s sake, and threatened her life. She should’ve gone with the Zylotech people. Why, oh why had she freaked out and shouted for his help? What had she been thinking?

When she reached the door, her mind blanked, her thoughts fleeing like the wind. Marek was shirtless, revealing planes of corded muscle. Her eyes devoured the line of his shoulders, down his rippling back to the pants slung low on his waist.

It wasn’t the first time she’d seen him half-naked. He’d flown her to the hospital in his arms, but its impact was bigger this time. Was it because he’d told her she was his mate, so her hormones kicked into overdrive more so than before?

“Enjoying the view?”

Her cheeks flushed at his amused smile. He was too gorgeous for her sanity.

What did one say when caught ogling?

This was a first for her. Usually, she was too busy buried in work to notice anyone or attract anyone’s notice.

“Yes,” she said with a glare, daring him to make fun of her.

The mirth on his face spread. He prowled toward her with fluid and predatory grace. Olivia clutched at the wall as her knees threatened to buckle from his sensual perusal.

“Anything else you’d like to see?” He stopped, leaning against the frame, his sinful whisper suggesting bodies sliding together, limbs tangled in ecstasy.

Oh, tempted, she was so tempted.Stop it,she berated herself. This wasn’t like her at all. She avoided his gaze, too afraid to fall under his spell, and saw the dark red blood flowing down the sink.
