“You said you’d help me with Betsy. I guess that was a lie too.”

Her look of betrayal stabbed into his cold, beating heart and was a thousand times worse than her anger.

“Iamhelping you,” he said in a softer tone. “You can’t help Betsy if you collapse from exhaustion or stress, but I’m willing to make a trade. I will translate the first twenty spells in here before tomorrow night. In return, you promise to take tonight off.”

Her furious glower could put a vampire’s to shame, but she gritted out two seconds later, “I want the translations by noon tomorrow.”

His lips quirked. “You drive a hard bargain but agreed.”

“Now get out.”

He might be falling in love with her growl. Marek whirled around and sauntered out of the room with the grimoire tucked under his arm.

It was going to be a long day.

Chapter Thirteen

“Ugh!”Oliviapunchedherfists in the air in a burst of anger. “God, I hate him!”

Andrea barked out a laugh and received a death glare.

“It’s not funny,” Olivia snapped with clenched teeth. “He can’t just waltz in here and tell me what to do. It’s bad enough I’m stuck in Vegas!”

The witch’s smile grew wider. “He’s a vampire. What did you expect? It’s also worse because you’re his mate.”

“So he says.” Olivia scoffed and picked up a cushion, stuffing it back on the couch with more strength than warranted.

“You don’t believe him?”

“You do?”

“Yes. Finding a soulmate is a rare gift.” Sadness crossed the other woman’s features. Her next words were quiet. “Not everyone’s as lucky.”

Her stomach squirmed in a familiar way whenever she wasn’t sure what to say next. Should she ask what caused Andrea’s expression? Was that too personal? What was the right thing to say?

In the end, she grumbled, “I’m not sure lucky is the word I’d use. I bet you didn’t know Marek kidnapped me. Is that normal? Kidnapping your mate? Not only did he manipulate me to come to Vegas, but he also has my sister as a hostage. If that’s how soulmates treat one another, I don’t think I want it.”

“Even if he flies you Dillon’s Chicken every day?” Olivia wished she could hold on to her anger, but she lost when Andrea wagged her brows. “Every week, maybe? Daily might be too much.”

A snicker escaped her, and then she was giggling. It was either that or curl up on the floor crying. She dropped to the couch, hand over her mouth. “I can’t believe he did that,” she said between laughs. “I should give him a restaurant list. One from every state.”

“Think bigger. Let’s make it international. Bring the best Beijing has to offer for dinner tonight.”

She was losing it, completely losing it as she sniggered. “Do you think I can bankrupt Vegas with food?”

Andrea’s eyes glittered with mischief. “You won’t know until you try.”

Something about the motivational phrase she’d used time and time again to encourage herself on her worst days, spoken in this situation, made her laugh harder.

As the laughter wore off, Olivia looked around at her chaotic room and sighed. “We made a mess, didn’t we?”

“We sure did. What’re you going to do now?”

“You heard Marek. I need to rest,” she said with a grimace. “Maybe call room service? Is that a thing?”

“You’re Marek’s mate. They can make it a thing. Tristan!”

“Yes?” the AI responded.
