Olivia!

Marek shot up in bed, instantly awake. His vampire was on a rampage. Shrieking and stomping and slashing.

Mate. Mate in danger.

He sensed her not far away. To the south.

Something was wrong.

A second to orient himself. He was in his room, his clothing dirty and tattered. He remembered the explosion, of being thrown, his body on fire. Vague images of the car. A chase. Before he’d blacked out.

It had been a trap. He’d led his team into a trap.

Where are the others? Did they all make it back?

Dead. They’re all dead. Like your brothers, his father taunted with laughter.

Mate!his vampire screamed.Must save our mate!

Olivia. Marek shook off the yawning dread from the failed mission and strained his power to locate Olivia. A blank wall greeted him. Fuck. Her mental barrier blocked him. Julian and Leah could talk to each other telepathically even before Julian had completed their mating bond.

He and Olivia weren’t so lucky.

Another wave of fear skittered down his spine. Marek shot out of bed and his world tilted. The fuck? He caught himself with a hand against the wall and looked down at his foot, which was still regenerating. The muscles had just grown and covered the bones with no skin to speak of.

Gritting his teeth, Marek half-ran, half-limped to the living room. In the fridge, he found bottled blood and downed three as quickly as possible. He was out the door as he finished the last one, still limping.

He needed more. More blood. More time. Neither of which he had. Something, instinct, or fate, or whatever, urged him on. If he didn’t act fast, he would lose her.

His newly regrown leg protested, and he almost lost his footing. Halfway to Olivia’s location, her presence a bright beacon inside him, a bone-shuddering bellow reverberated in the air.

A sense of ominous things to come blanketed the city. Marek suppressed the instinct to find a hole and hide. People scurried out of his way and into buildings, ready to hide until the dark and vengeful presence passed.

Only one being had that power in Vegas.

Julian.

And only one reason Julian emanated the need to commit mass murder.

Leah was hurt.

Julian was traveling at lightning speed in the same direction as he was. Only a dead person, vampire or human, could miss The Ruler of Vegas’ frightening presence.

Olivia’s position constantly changed. Fast. She must be in a vehicle. As Marek got closer, the blade of fear in his chest twisted deeper. The car was moving too fast, and he was too damned weak to outrun it. Flying wouldn’t be quick enough, either.

His father goaded him with smug laughter. Can’t even keep your own mate safe.

He wouldn’t lose her. Stupid, stupid to only put one vampire on Olivia’s guard detail. He tried to reach out to Olivia’s guard, only to be greeted by black emptiness.

Dead.

Fuck. He’d let his guard down. His senses expanded as he tried to locate others who could help. Rowan, Sascha, and Darren were awake, no doubt because of Julian’s roar, and perked up at Marek’s probe. They were alive. Did everyone else make it out?

Boss?Sascha asked.You awake?

Yes.He apprised them of the current situation. How is everyone?

Peachy,Sascha said in a too-bright voice.Joachim lost an arm and is still recovering, but everyone else came back in one piece. All thanks to you.
