Page 36 of Reckless Dare

“Sweetheart, did you have to get drunk to ask me?” I erase the distance between us and wrap my arm around her waist. I have no idea what the hell she really wants, but I’m sure going to have fun with it.

She pushes me away. “That’s not what I mean, asshole. I need a fake boyfriend. Look, it’s important to my dad that he sees me fall in love. I’m not going to do that, but I can at least pretend. He might not…” She swallows hard and blinks a few times. “He might not live…”

She can’t finish, and in that moment she looks so vulnerable, all the joking and teasing loses its attraction. I might be an asshole, but I’m not a bully.

“Let me get this straight. You want me to be your fake boyfriend? You want me to lie to your father who, mind you, I’ve grown to like and respect?”

She shakes her head and starts pacing, or distancing herself from me, stopping by the window, staring into the night. “You say it as if I didn’t love or respect him. It will be a lie, but he would never know, so it’s not a betrayal. It would make him happy.”

I don’t know if it’s my newly acquired streak of helping others or rather a new level of insanity I hit unexpectedly, but I surprise us both with a simple “Okay.”

London whips around. “Okay?”

“Yes, okay.” Perhaps being her fake boyfriend is the fastest way to sleep with her and finally get back on the horse. Also, dating someone would prove to Rocco he’s been wrong about me the whole time.

“Just like that.” She is so genuinely taken aback that it makes me question the whole thing. Why would she come to me if she expected me to refuse?

“Yeah.” I nod.

She narrows her eyes. “Why?”

Jesus, enough with the twenty questions. “Do you want me to date you or not?”

“Fake date me.” She folds her arms across her chest. “Yes, I do. I just feel I’m missing something. Why do I never understand your motivations?”

“I guess that would be another why you won’t understand.” I walk into the living room. “Let’s discuss the rules.”

“Rules?” London appears from the other side of the wall between the living space and the kitchen.

“Of course, we can’t fake it without some sort of code of conduct. I’m not taking you on dates, dinners, or movies. We stay either at your place, or occasionally mine, for the benefit of your parents.”

“God, and here I worried you were a romantic. Fine. That works for me. Frankly, I have no desire to spend time with you.”

Her remark stings more than it should. After all, I share that desire with her. Minus the need to fuck her.

“We should go on pretend dates though,” she adds.

“That’s what would happen here,” I insist.

Again, I’m not sure why I’m even laying down the rules, but frankly her company isn’t pleasant enough that I want to spend more time than necessary with her. Unless it’s with my cock buried inside her.

“Okay, fine. Anything else?” She collapses on the other side of the sofa, as far from me as possible.

No problem. Over the course of our next few pretend dates, I’ll get her into my lap. Preferably straddling me. My cock twitches at the idea.

“I’m good. What is our origin story, then?” I move sideways to face her, placing my elbow on the backrest.

“Before we agree on that, I’d like to suggest a few rules.” She doesn’t wait for me to object. “It doesn’t look good that you have a young woman coming in and out of here all the time, so I think we need to make sure my dad and Bianca buy into the researcher idea and perhaps meet Patty.”

“How many times do I need to tell you that Nia works for me and occasionally uses my guest room to study?” I roll my eyes. “But fine, as far as I’m concerned, we can have dinner with her at your place. She works for me.” I bark the last sentence, irked by London’s insistence that I’m dating the girl.

“Okay, it’s just the optics. You can fuck her as long as no one knows. I’m not excited about this boyfriend idea as it is, but I don’t want to be made a fool when my fake boyfriend openly cheats on me.”

“Let’s move to the background story. I’m really done explaining Nia to you.” I turn and tilt my head to the back of the couch, closing my eyes. I’ve been her fake boyfriend for five minutes and I’m already regretting it.

“Okay, well, I guess we met in the hallway, you invited me to your place, and we fought the attraction for a bit but realized it’s stronger. I’ll tell Dad I’m dating you tomorrow morning. There is no one else we need to officially announce it to, anyway.”

I open my eyes to look at her. “So how long do I need to do this?”
