“Okay.” She cackles and leaves to join her coworkers.

I pack up my things and decide I’ll just go to the hotel and wait there for Gio. We don’t need to do everything together. Especially not after Tully’s words.

“We can have a quick dinner tonight before you leave.” Audrey’s husky suggestion carries to my ears, and I roll my eyes. I guess he doesn’t need me to wait for him, anyway.

I rush to the exit, escaping his response, but his voice stops me in my tracks.

“Mila!”

I face him, heat spreading from my cheeks to my ears. He grabs his things and storms in my direction. Moving to avoid him, I stagger outside and almost collide with a pedestrian. Gio yanks me away from the man, but that causes me to crash against him.

Solid muscles. Intoxicating scent. Deep brown eyes. And flared nostrils.

“Where do you think you’re going?”

“I-I…” Why is he upset with me? I fucking clear the decks for his date, and he’s pissed I didn’t ask for permission to leave? “I was going to wait for you at the hotel.”

“Why?”

“You were making arrangements for a date.” Jesus, that’s what I lead with?

“No, I wasn’t,” he grinds through his teeth.

He’s still holding me, protecting me, though it’s not necessary. I wish he wasn’t so close. His breath mixes with mine, and it’s so hard to think with him taking over all the space. All the air. All my mind.

“You’re right, Lydia does that for you.” I’ve never been a spiteful person, but here I am. Gio Cassinetti turns me into this woman I don’t even recognize.

“Do you have an opinion about my lifestyle?” he spits.

“I do, actually, but I also have self-preservations skills, so I’m going to keep it to myself.”

A sly grin makes me swallow hard. “Are you jealous, Princess? Would you like to get on Lydia’s list?”

The air escapes me in a stunned huff. Is he for real? Never. Not in a million years. He might think I’m slutty, but there is no way I’d ever consider getting on rotation.

So why am I not saying anything?

Princess. Does he want me to become more? Is that why he asked? That’s not flattering at all. Or respectful. Why is my brain non-existent right now?Stop this, Mila.

“Let me go. People are already talking.”

He drops his hands, as if I’ve burned him. The loss of his touch sends shivers down my spine. If looks could kill, I would probably be seriously wounded. If not dead.

“Tully suggested—”

“Get in the car, Mila,” he growls. “Now!”

Chapter7

Mila

We don’t speak on the way to the hotel. For some strange reason, I feel like I’ve done something wrong. Jesus. The uneasiness this man’s behavior injects into my veins will give me an ulcer.

“Let’s get dinner.” The clipped tone leaves no room for argument as he turns toward the restaurant in the lobby of our hotel.

I sigh and follow. Because I’m hungry, I tell myself.

We get a table and order. Gio pulls out his tablet and starts working. Willing him to look up and talk to me, I glare, but the man is immune to my attempts at engaging him. With a sigh, I pull out my tablet and phone to monitor the media coverage we receive.
