Page 47 of Reckless Deal

I stare at her message, unsure how to interpret it. If I even attempted to date this woman in anormalway, I’d fuck it up.

A moment of winesty.

The moment stretches as I stare at my phone, suddenly feeling uncomfortable in my own skin. I know she might be taking care of something before responding, but for fuck’s sake, it’s a yes or no question.

Okay.

I don’t want to be texting anymore.

Another endless beat of silence from her and I stand up to pour myself more whiskey. I’m about to dial her when her response comes.

Oh, okay. We should stop. I understand.

Okay, now I’m pissed. I don’t even know at whom. Not at Mila, but at the fucked-up situation.

No, you don’t. I miss you and I’m solving that problem right now. See me at the office in two hours.

Chapter14

Gio

“You’ll need to get Portia looped in on this,” Fatima, my legal counselor, warns.

“Okay, I’ll do that, but it can wait till after the break. Let’s just get the paperwork signed now.”

“Everything is prepared. You don’t have to stay for this. I’ll take care of it.” Fatima takes the folder from my desk.

“No, I want to be here to make sure…”

Her hawk-like gaze stops me. “Gio, has something happened between the two of you already?”

I stand up and adjust my cufflinks. “Why would you ask that?” I don’t want to lie to Fatima, but I can’t tell her I almost fucked an employee. Consensual or not.

She narrows her eyes at me. “I need to know. You pay me to protect you, but frankly you always let me deal with your ladies and your eager involvement has me worried.”

Fuck me. I hate every minute of this. I wish I’d never hired Mila. None of this is normal. I can’t even explore the attraction without being questioned.

“There is chemistry. We kept it appropriate and within the company policy.”

Fatima’s smile stretches across her face, full of smirk. “She is special.”

“And now you’re inappropriate,” I growl.

“I’ve been running your dating scheme for long enough to have the right to—”

“Stop right now,” I warn her, and she laughs.

Sometimes I wish the humiliation would have ended with the financial settlements, but here we are. I’m still a source of entertainment for some.

A knock on my office door stops her, and she immediately puts on a business-like face. I like that about Fatima, she is relaxed and fun, but ruthless and professional.

I didn’t drag Lydia to work as we’re officially closed for a week, so I go to open the door.

My eyes meet with the light blue sparkle. God, I haven’t seen her for a few weeks and my memories of that beautiful face were completely wrong. She is even more beautiful. Her long hair is in a ponytail on top of her head, and I clench my fist to stop myself from wrapping it in my palm and pulling her to me.

She smiles at me and it hits me in the chest, spreading sunshine through my cynical soul. We stare at each other for a long moment, just absorbing the sight.

“Hi,” she breathes, and it makes me unreasonably happy to have this effect on her. Thank fucking God, since there is a lump growing in my throat that shouldn’t be there.
