“I can do some shifting. See you at seven or so?”

God, she would rather have needles pushed under her nails.

“See you then, sweetheart. Love you.”

“Love you too, Dad.”

She could handle dinner with the Judge if Derrick were still alive—but he wasn’t.

So she called Matt.

If she had to do this, he was coming with her. Matt liked the Judge. He remained in her good graces, making him the perfect buffer.

He would say yes. He always did.

Lucky for her.

The office closed in five minutes.

Finley waited in the farthest corner of the parking lot. When Lena Marsh exited the building, Finley intended to follow her home. She had the woman’s address, but she had no idea what her personal schedule for the evening might be. Better to follow her from here than to wait at her place and miss her.

Her cell vibrated.

Houser.

The name was one she would just as soon not appear as an incoming call. Then again, maybe he had something new on Derrick’s case. Not that she really expected Detective Houser to, but this had been a strange day.

“O’Sullivan.” She braced for trouble.

“Hello. Eric Houser here. Do you have a few minutes?”

She glanced at the clinic entrance. No sign of Marsh just yet. “Sure, what’s up?”

“I wanted to let you know I’m still working on your husband’s case. Unfortunately, I don’t have anything new to share, but I wanted to check in and let you know I haven’t forgotten.”

Wow. Okay. What a novel idea. A detective who was concerned as to whether you were wondering what he was doing. Not likely. Nothing against detectives, but they were busy people. There was no time for speculating about what a victim’s family was wondering—sadly. It wasn’t about not caring; it was about being overwhelmed.

There would be a reason for his call, and it had nothing to do with what she might be thinking. “I appreciate you touching base with me.”

Dead air hummed between them.

“Look,” he said, kicking off whatever he intended to say next.

Here it came. The real reason he had called.

“I had a call a little while ago from Detective Ronald Graves from the East Precinct.”

She should have known this was coming. Rather than make small talk, she waited for him to continue.

“This homicide vic, Tark Brant, appears to have had a connection to Billy Hughes from the convenience store shooting back in July.”
