Behind me, I heard the crunch of wheels on the gravel parking lot.

I stared straight ahead, praying I wouldn’t give away a thing.

An engine idled and shut off.

Tracy hadn’t seemed to notice.

I drew a breath as she locked her gaze on mine and lunged forward.

Chapter Twenty-Two

Zack

Every mile felt like ten.

“My brothers got in. The mission is complete.”

Relief spread through me. At least when we got to Sadie, we could give her some good news.

We would get to Sadie.

Jaxson sighed heavily. “But we’ve lost visual confirmation of Sadie.”

My pulse spiked. “What do you mean?”

“She’s alive as of thirty seconds ago.” Jaxson’s voice was determined but emotionless.

Anger pulsed through me. “Is that supposed to make me feel better?”

“Why can’t they see her?” I pressed, watching a blur of pine and fir trees speed by.

“They cut the video,” Jaxson answered.

“Why would they do that?”

“Several reasons.”

I shook my head in anger.

“You wanted to do things our way, Zack.”

I turned in the seat to look at Jaxson.

His eyes stayed on mine. “We don’t get caught, and we will continue operating like that.”

I nodded. “No. I get it.”

“There it is,” Ian said as the dumpy motel came into view.

The L-shaped, one-story building had about a dozen doors. The white paint on the building had long since turned beige. The lime green doors now looked like the color of split-pea soup.

I scoured every inch of the building and spotted a curtain ruffling in the distance.

“There. Three doors from the left end.” We’d found the right room. Ian parked the truck by the road. I jumped out, racing toward the pea-green door. I would make it in time.

I would save Sadie if it were the last thing I did.

Ian and Jaxson were right behind me.
