Ian knelt next to me, keeping his eyes on my injury.

Jaxson brought the truck to the door.

“Why aren’t you calling the medics?” she nearly screamed.

“Keeping you safe and my brother and the Volkovs out of trouble is more important,” I said as confidently as I could.

“No. No. No. No. Don’t say that.” She beat her fist on my chest. “I need you.”

Her voice went distant. “I’m here, Sadie. I’ll always be here.”

Jaxson and Ian lifted me to the truck, sliding me into the backseat. Sadie wouldn’t leave my side. Jaxson shut the door and climbed into the truck as Ian peeled out of the parking lot.

“Let’s just pray that no one drives by until help arrives,” Jaxson muttered.

“Help?” Sadie questioned through tears. “Aren’t we getting Zack help?”

“He means help to clean up the scene.”

My eyes met Sadie’s, and I wondered if this was the end.

Coldness fell over me as I tried to lift my fingers to hers.

She was so beautiful. She was worth it all. She was worth everything.

I smiled at her, and she wiped away a tear, leaving a smudge of blood in its place.

“We need the hospital.” Sadie’s gaze hardened. “And I don’t care who goes to jail.”

“I’m getting him there, Sadie. I wouldn’t let my brother…”

His words sounded muffled, like I was in some emotionless nightmare where I wanted to holler, but nobody heard.

Sadie leaned over me, her familiar scents of coconut and lime washing over me.

Man, I loved this woman.

I’d do anything for her.

“ETA is three minutes,” Jaxson supplied.

Did I have three minutes? I closed my eyes as Sadie ran her fingers down my cheek.

“You’ve got this, Zack. We’ve got plans. We’ve got our future. Don’t you die on me. I will be so pissed.”

I tried to laugh, but I just flicked my eyes open, trying to take in every second of her that I could before…

Jaxson was on the phone speaking in some code, or I was even farther gone than I realized. He hung up and looked at my brother. Both of their expressions were grim. There were no pep talks.

“Things should be taken care of in less than thirty,” Jaxson explained.

Ian scowled. “How is that even possible?”

Jaxson nodded. “Do you want answers?”

Ian shook his head. “No, but thank you. You’re right. Less is better.”

“Call my sister,” Sadie said softly as her thumb gently caressed my forehead.
