MIA

This has to go well. I mean, it can’t be any worse than it was on Earth,Mia prayed silently as the airship landed gently at the Tor’vian’s base. The flight from Earth to her new home planet had been one filled with anxiety and curiosity.

She looked out at the windows as the craft slowed to a stop in front of the civilian space center port. The planet looked inviting and very similar to Earth, at least on the surface.

Mia’s crystal blue eyes adjusted to the new lighting as she walked out.

“Mia Ambrose?”

She turned to address her caller, surprised to hear her native language. It looked to be a Tor’vian with his blue-tinged skin and faded white markings covering his arms. Other than that, he appeared almost human, like most Tor’vians. Well, except for the eyes.

Mia looked into the purple-gold eyes. “Yes.”

He smiled with a nod. “My name is Chaffron. I am to take you to your new family to see if you’ll be a good match with them.”

She noticed he was staring at her hair, not her eyes. Hard.

She nervously started pulling at her locks.

Chaffron shook his head. “I’m so sorry for staring. It’s just we don’t have many … if any, redheads on our planet. You’re the first one I’ve ever seen,” he said almost apologetically.

Mia laughed lightly at the embarrassed young alien. She sympathized since she was trying to shake off her own discomfort. “Good to know.”Oh, joy, a reason to stand out.She quickly changed the subject so she could focus on her purpose here before doubt started to overtake her. “So, I am to go to a Mr. …”

“You are to go to Tharon’s home. He personally selected you based on your resume, which is a great compliment. He is very … specific on who he lets close to his children.”

“What’s his last name? It wasn’t on any paperwork.”

“Oh, we don’t go by last names exactly. We have our name and what we call our family when we are together, but that’s it.”

“Good to know.” She wondered how many times she would be saying that phrase.

Mia quickened her pace to keep up with the tall, long-legged alien. From what she’d seen so far, her petite stature was not accommodating to the majority of the Tor’vians.

As she followed Chaffron to wherever he was taking her, she looked around at the foreign planet. All Mia knew about the Tor’vians as a race was that they were gentler than most of the galaxy’s species. That was one of the reasons she had applied to be a nanny on this specific planet. She didn’t want to deal with the political upheavals, wars, or famines that plagued other systems.

“Where do I get my bags?” she asked when she saw they were heading out the exit instead of to the cargo section.

Chaffron kept walking as he answered. “They will be retrieved for you. Tharon has already set up everything to be taken care of. We are to go straight to the house.”

“Oh, okay.”

They arrived at a slick black car that looked suspiciously discreet. Mia realized that maybe she should have requested more information about her new boss.

She slid into the back seat since that was the door Chaffron opened for her. Mia had assumed that was because there was another person in the front, but when she sat down, the car was empty until Chaffron opened the driver’s door.

“Do you want me to sit up front with you?”

He looked with confusion at her in the rearview mirror. “Why on Tor’via would I want you to do that?”

Mia shrunk back, not sure what to say. “Never mind.”

She had heard about all the planets having different customs, but for some reason, she didn’t think it was something she needed to research. She was kicking herself in the ass now because she was afraid she’d inadvertently offended the Tor’vian.

She decided to take advantage of the time it would take to get to her new home and learn some things. “Can all of you speak English well, or just you?”

He smiled at her through the mirror. “Not very many speak it. So, you will be implanted with a language chip upon our arrival to the house.”
