She pulled her hand back and shook her head once more. She needed to focus on breakfast. She was the nanny.

“Would you like to help?” she asked, waving a hand over the meat. “You can fry the meat while I do the pancakes.”

A smile spread across his face, and he nodded, pulling himself out of the chair. She scooted over as he grabbed the meat off the counter. His arm brushed against hers, and she felt shockwaves run over her skin.

It surprised her how well they worked alongside each other. When she needed something, he was handing it to her before she could even ask. And when he needed a utensil, she already had it ready for him.

They were laughing as they cooked and continued to talk. She told him about how her mother used to sing in the kitchen and never on the right pitch. She was pretty sure her mother did it to make her laugh.

They were laughing so hard that she dropped her spatula. She bent over to grab it, but at the same time, so did Tharon, and their heads smacked together.

Pain radiated over her head, and she winced. “Oh, geez.”

Tharon pulled back, his eyes wide. “Are you okay? That sounded like it hurt. Do you have a bump?”

She rubbed at her head, looking at him. “Did you not feel that?”

“No, we have thick skulls.”

She pulled her hand down, nodding her head. “Noted.”

She blinked and realized that Tharon was just a few inches from her. She felt her breath catch, staring into his eyes.

She took in how soft his skin looked and how gentle his eyes were. She could memorize every feature of his face. She chewed on her cheek, feeling that she wanted to be closer to him. It was wrong, but dang, what would happen if she just let herself have something for once?

She swallowed. “Sorry.”

He smiled at her. “It was my head. Don't apologize.”

“Fair,” she said with a smirk. “You should really watch where you swing that thing. It could really hurt someone.”

He chuckled, and his hand reached up, rubbing at her skull. “I think you’ll be okay. Doesn't feel like you have a bump.”

Tharon looked deep into her eyes, and she felt the pull. They both leaned forward, and she felt his lips gently press against hers. It was soft, like a brush sweeping over her lips.

“Dad? Are you out here?” Cian spoke up with a sleepy voice.

They pulled away quickly, and Tharon sprung back. Her face flushed hot, realizing he’d kissed her. And she had kissed him back.

THARON

He glanced at his kids across the table, smiling at them. He couldn’t help the happiness swelling inside him.

His eyes swept toward Mia, and he took her in. She smiled as she looked at Cian, who giggled as she took a large bite of her pancake, smearing syrup all over her chin. Mia reached out, wiping at her face as she shook her head, smirking.

He looked at Triat and watched him wiggle in his chair. He was chewing with a happy smile, seeming to hum to himself. He could hear his legs swinging underneath the table.

He looked back at Mia, knowing that over a short period of time, the kids had grown attached to her. They liked her, and he was happy.

He thought about the kiss in the kitchen and the way his heart fluttered as he stared into her eyes. He hadn’t intended to do anything, but having her so close, it became hard to resist.

Her lips had been soft when he pressed his against hers. He knew it was wrong, but she’d been just in front of him. He couldn’t help but kiss her. She looked perfect at that moment, rubbing at her head.

His stomach flipped, watching her lean over and giggle as she spoke to Cian. She placed her napkin back down, taking a sip of her water. He wished for that moment to never end. They were all around the table together like it was meant to be.

“Dad,” Triat spoke up, his mouth full of food. He could see food spit out as he spoke. “Can we go to the family cabin? We haven’t gone in a while, and I was hoping we could.”
