“I’m interested in hearing about it, but for now, let’s enjoy dinner.”

They took the next hour to finish their meal, enjoying every morsel. Even Mia was used to the cuisine by this time and found ways to make the same meal she cooked for them taste excellent to her as well. After dinner, Cian and Triat excused themselves to get ready for bed and do some reading. Mia and Tharon cleared the table and walked out to the porch to discuss his day at work.

“I received a message today that Kiek has been getting transmissions from an unknown individual. This being has been instructing him not only on my whereabouts but also on the children. Most recently, he has been told about you as well and the part you are playing in the household.”

“You don’t think they suspect the bond that is growing between us, do you?”

“I don’t think they know anything about that. What has me worried is how much they know and the instructions they are giving him. All this time, I thought Kiek was coming after me because of my position in security.”

“Do you think they are purposefully coming after the children?”

“I am beginning to wonder if that is their objective. The idea that he is being led by another being is what has me the most worried. If I can’t figure out who this other individual is, I won’t be able to properly protect the children … or you.” They had moved closer together while they were talking and were almost holding hands before he completed his statement.

“I hope they are not here because of me. I would hate to think that I have brought any trouble to you or your …” Mia had paused and was squinting into the distance. “What is that by the trees? I see something glinting in the light over there.”

He moved closer to the tree line and struggled to see what she had seen, but the second he saw it, he lunged toward the glinting object. After struggling for a few moments to stop what he had found and bring it back to the porch, he walked back with what looked like a broken drone in his hands.

“Is that what I think it is?”

“It is a video drone. It is no longer transmitting now, but it was certainly transmitting when I got to it.”

“It looks way more advanced than the ones we had on Earth, but I am glad that I spotted it when I did.”

“I’m just hoping that it will provide me with more information about this whole mess that Kiek is wrapped up in. I am no longer under the impression that he is commanding any of the events that have unfolded recently. Even in our dealings before, he was never so intelligent as to use a drone to get footage of me.”

“Was it just me, or were we sharing a moment again?”

“If we were, I am glad you stopped it when you saw this. The last thing I need is for Kiek to have video evidence of me engaging romantically with an Earthling.”

Everything he said was the truth, but he could tell by the look on her face that his words had stung.

TWELVE

MIA

The days continued to go by rather smoothly despite Mia and Tharon's obvious differences in cultural upbringing. She tried to look at it in a lighthearted way rather than as a barrier that stood in their way of connection. Her affection for him was growing exponentially, to the point where she had started to worry about the fact that he obviously could not feel the same.

She had come there as a hire, had fallen in love with the children, and had slept with her boss. However, in her mind, it wasn't just some fling. She had to proceed with caution regarding the Tor’vian repulsion with stepmothers, but Tharon had never said they couldn’t have any relationship at all. She wondered what it could mean for a future between them.

Mia had grown so immersed in Tharon, Cian, and Triat's world that she completely forgot about her own upcoming birthday. She only remembered the night before when she was already dozing off to sleep. She was amused by how heavily invested in the alien family she had become.

The next day, after breakfast, Tharon pulled her aside into the bedroom while the kids got ready for a day outside. He took her by surprise, pushing her gently against a wall and burying his face into the nape of her neck. Her body responded to his affection in kind, her breasts pressing against his chest, her body set ablaze by a single gesture.

"Tharon," she said, voice sultry and low. "What are you doing, babe? The kids are right there."

Despite her words, she relished in the way his hands fawned all over her. She purred, even lifting her leg to hitch up over his waist as his tender lips glided over to the shelf of her breasts.

“I hear that it's someone's birthday,” he growled, teasing the hem of her scoop-neck shirt.

"Mmm, how did you know?"

"I have my ways."

After one of the children called out for her attention, they peeled away from one another. She was flustered but in the most wonderful way possible.

"Wear your finest attire tonight," he whispered into her ear in the playroom. "I am going to celebrate you all night long. The children have a sitter coming later."

She tried to hide her blush for the rest of the day, trying to investigate in her mind how he had figured out that it was her birthday. She had started to wonder if his kind had telepathy, but then, over lunch, he informed Mia that her birthday was listed on her application form.
