She gathered the children closer but didn’t say anything because she didn’t want to scare them needlessly. When the guards were about fifty yards from the glinting objects, four armed men jumped out from the trees.

“Cian! Triat! You know where to go!” The children ran while the guards charged to stop the armed trespassers.

Three against four did not seem like a fair fight, so Mia used her personal transmitter to contact Tharon. She typed a quick message to him, hoping he would be able to arrive quickly, and reoriented herself to her surroundings.

One of the guards took out one of the armed men who had tried to ambush them. No sooner had she noticed that one man was down before another group of three men came out of the tree line. She started hoping beyond hope that Tharon would get there sooner rather than later.

This shit had to come to a stop. Now.

TWENTY-TWO

THARON

Tharon had just finished a meeting with some of his military chiefs when he received the message from Mia. “My children and Mia are under attack. I need as many men as you can gather, and we need to get there now!” He and a few of his chiefs left together immediately and arrived in time to see the security detail being overpowered and Mia on the front lines with the detail fighting back.

He arrived at her side and tackled one of the men who was attacking Mia. He picked up the man he had just tackled and threw him into another man. While they were struggling to get back to their feet, he shouted to Mia. “Go protect the children. We can handle this!”

The rest of his men finally arrive. The soldiers swarmed in from every direction, and he had never been prouder of his chiefs for their ability to direct their personnel. He continued to pick men up and throw them into other men to disorient them, but there were so many that it quickly became ineffective.

“I can handle the men in this area if you can take care of the men over there together.” He started toward the group of five men that he told his chiefs he could handle while they went after the other twenty. He walked up to the first man as the man raised his weapon to fire on him.

Tharon yanked the weapon out of the guy’s hands, broke it in half, and ran the sharp end through the middle of the guy, who toppled over as he walked by him. The other four men watched this and started to back away as he drew closer to them. The rage in his eyes continued to glint in the light as he neared the four.

He picked up the closest man by his neck and broke it with one hand while he reached for another guy next to him. He grabbed the third man by the shirt and pulled him in close. “If you know what’s good for you, you will cuff the other two men with you and then cuff yourself. Then you’ll wait here until this scene has calmed down enough for us to process you for planetary war crimes.”

He turned to walk away as the third man did exactly what he told him to. His chiefs seemed to have everything under control, but for added emphasis, he joined in on the battle. As he approached the large group of attackers, they looked over to see two of their men dead and three of them cuffed and waiting idly by. Before any of them could make sense of what they were seeing, he yanked one of them up by his neck and broke it with one hand.

Some of the enemy immediately lowered their weapons in fear of his capabilities. He yelled out across the crowd to get the attention of everyone present. “I have already killed three of your men and had three of them cuffed. If any of you want to live past today, you will drop your weapons and allow my men to cuff you and process you for arrest.”

Some of the men who had seen what happened to the first group of five men complied with his statement and lowered their weapons to the ground. Other men had not seen what had happened and chanced their survival odds. He took the weapon of the first man to raise it in his direction from over someone else’s head and beat the man who raised it toward him.

“I told you all to lower your weapons. The next man to point their weapon in my direction will die by that weapon. Now …” he continued in a booming voice. “The rest of you will lower your weapons and be prepared to be detained. I’ll finish dealing with this guy.”

He carried the man a short distance from the group and tried to calmly talk to him. “I am giving you one more chance to surrender. If you do, you will give me every bit of information you have on the person who sent you to attack my children. If you don’t give me the information I need, you will die here now.”

Instead of talking to Tharon, the guy spit on him. “I hope the Earthling and your yard rats die horrible deaths.”

Tharon picked the guy up by his neck and slammed him onto the ground. He walked back as his men cuffed those remaining.

“Can you arrange to have these men taken to the holding facility closest to my office? I want to speak to them first thing in the morning.”

“Yes, sir. They’ll be waiting for you before we process them.”

“Good, maybe something positive will come of this.” He started to walk away as another man, cuffed already, yelled and charged at him. Tharon grabbed the militant and escorted him to the transport. “I’ll take you in myself since you are so eager to meet me.”

Tharon threw him into the back of his vehicle. One of his chiefs approached. “Are you sure you want to take him yourself? One of us can take him in so you can check on your children and Mia.”

“I suppose that may be a better idea. I am sure after so many confrontations, my children are probably very shaken up. Thank you. I will talk to him first in the morning over everyone else, though.” He coordinated the apprehension of the remaining men, making sure everyone was secure, and nobody could escape.

“If you have everyone taken care of, I am going check on Mia and the children.” His chief gave him a firm salute, and Tharon left the scene when the last vehicle full of apprehended men was gone. He hurried to the underground bunker where the children and Mia were. “You can all come out now.”

Mia was the first to come out, checking the surroundings as she did. She ran to him when she realized the scene was completely clear and gave him a huge hug, followed quickly by the children. “How did you manage to take care of everyone?”

“Let’s not worry about that for tonight and just say I know I can count on my chiefs.” He walked with the three of them back to their dwelling to settle in for the evening. “I think we all need to relax. We’ll order food in for the evening and stay home and watch a movie together. How does that sound?”

“That sounds great! Are we going to watch an exciting movie?” Triat apparently had not had enough excitement for one day yet.

“Okay, maybe let’s forget the movie. We’ll find a board game to play instead. We all need to relax, not let our nerves continue to be rattled by some exciting or violent action film.”
