I slammed on the brakes, and the tires screeched to a halt, leaving a cloud of smoke behind us. Angrily, I hit the steering wheel with gritted teeth.

Giselle trembled visibly with tears in her eyes and looked at me expectantly. I promised to protect her. I was not going to let her down.

I gripped my gun and handed her my phone.

“Giselle...”

As though sensing my next step of action, she held on to me, with a pleading look in her eyes. She shook her head, her lips trembling. “No.”

“The second I leave this car, call Sergey.”

“No, Nikolai. Don’t go out there,” she cried. “Please, don’t go. We could just wait here, and I’ll call Sergey, and he’ll find us and...”

“Giselle,” I stopped her ranting and held her gaze. “Call Sergey and keep your head down.”

The sound of her muffled sobs made me even more resolved to end this. I opened the door and leaped out of the car, aiming the gun at the six men who stood in front of their vehicles.

“We will kill you, and then your beautiful...”

I pulled the trigger, and a bullet flew into the man’s head. His eyes rolled to the back of his head and he dropped to his knees. “You keep her out of your filthy mouth,” I growled.

The other men, too stunned to speak, glanced between us, and raised their guns. I aimed and fired two bullets at another man, grazing his shoulder and putting a hole through his knees.

I took cover beside the car's bumper as the other four opened fire. Giselle shrieked and whimpered, and I shouted, “Keep your head down!”

Two of the men ran out of bullets. That was an opening, my opportunity. And I seized it. Two shots rang from my gun, and another hefty man dropped dead to the ground.

The remaining three huddled closely, turning and pointing their guns aimlessly in the air. With steps as stealthy as a tiger, I moved to the rear.

I leaned my head against the cold steel and clutched the gun against my chest. The barrel had one bullet left. I had to think smart. And fast.

“Come out and face us, coward!”

I sucked in a deep breath, tucked the gun between my belt, and rose to my feet.

“In my opinion, cowards are those who fight unarmed men with guns,” I raised my fists and smirked. “Who’s ready to dance?”

With lightning speed, I rushed at them with a furious roar, my clad feet hitting the asphalt with determination. Their bullets whizzed through the air, but I bypassed them with fluid grace, dodging, and weaving through.

I latched onto a man’s shoulder and knocked him out with a punch. I took his gun and used his body as a shield against the other two. I moved to the corner, letting the man’s body fall on a heap of metal strewn on the ground.

One of the men lunged at me, landing an unexpected punch to my jaw. I staggered but was quick on my feet.

I shot at him. He fell to the ground. Another gunshot pricked the air. But it wasn’t from my gun.

A sharp searing pain erupted in my chest, and I looked down at it. My eyes widened with disbelief as I clutched my chest. Warmth and wetness spread through my fingers. A deep shade of crimson red left a huge mark on the white fabric of my shirt.

The bastard had caused more than just a scratch.

A wave of dizziness washed over me, and my vision blurred as the pain intensified. I aimed my gun at his head as his finger traveled to the trigger. Too bad he was slow.

I fired, and he dropped to the ground like the worthless fly that he was. A grin formed on my lips, but as soon as it came, it fell.

With trembling legs, I staggered back to the car, and sank to the ground. The world was spinning, and the surroundings became a blur of colors and sounds. I heard someone scream.

“Nikolai!”

Gasping for air, I fought to stay conscious, my fingers slick with my own blood. But soon, the colors vanished, and the world around me turned black.
