Giselle twitched in my arm and I looked at her. She blinked her eyes open, then winced. “Nik?”

“I’m right here.” She felt cold in my hand as I cupped her face. “Right here, baby.”

Tears welled in her eyes and spilled down her face. “I thought I’d never see you again,” she sobbed, her voice weak. “I thought I’d never get to chance to tell you the truth.”

I slid my finger through her hair. “I know the truth, bay. I know you never wanted to betray me. I know it all.”

She flashed a weak smile at me. “I’m tired. I want to sleep.” She tried to close her eyes, but I shook her awake.

“No. No, Giselle.” Her dark hair had matted on her face with blood. I tucked the strands behind her ear. “You can’t fall asleep, baby. Not now. Okay?”

“How about you two sleep together?” Angelo pointed a gun at me. I didn’t have a fucking idea where he’d tucked it out from.

I leaned Giselle against the leg of the desk to keep her safe from the bullets and stood. “Kill me if you want to, but let Giselle go.”

Angelo shook his head. “Nay. I don’t think so. The bitch is going with you.”

He cocked the gun. “Say hello to my father for me.”

His fingers moved to press the trigger. A bang sounded in the room, my ears ringing from the shot and the smell of gunpowder filling the air.

Blood sprouted from Angelo’s chest, his eyes wide as he stared over my shoulder before he dropped to the floor lifelessly. I whirled around.

Giselle wasn’t in the same position I’d left her. She was on her knees, holding a gun and trembling. “I think I killed him,” she rasped. “I-I just killed someone.”

“Giselle,” I whispered, approaching her cautiously. “Hey.’

She looked at me with those shaky and teary, brown eyes. “What have I done?”

“You did nothing wrong.” I stepped closer to her. “Nothing wrong.” I took the gun from her and tucked it in my upholster, then wrapped my arm around her and pulled her closer.

“I killed him,” she cried, quivering beneath me. “I killed my half-brother.”

“You only did what you had to, Giselle.” I trailed my fingers along her back, caressing her. “You protected me. You did so good.”

“But Angelo…he’s dead.”

“He deserved it.

She shook against my chest for a while, then she went limp. I placed my fingers on her wrist and relief washed over me when I saw that she was breathing.

“What the hell happened here?” Maxim asked, stepping over the shattered vase on the floor. “Did she…”

I knew what he was asking. “She did. She’s in shock and I think she’s dehydrated too.”

Vlad walked over to Angelo and stirred him with his feet. “Is this bastard dead for real?”

“As dead as a man can get.” I stood from the ground and lifted Giselle into my arms.

“Should I call Dr. Ivanov?” Maxim asked, looking at Giselle. Concern marred his features.

“Yes.”

I carried Giselle to the S.U.V. packed outside Pietro Manor and laid her in the backseat. So much had happened in a little over three months. We’d hated each other, but we’d reached the stage where we would die and kill for each other.

“We’ve come a long way, Giselle,” I whispered, running my finger through her hair.

Giselle had come into my life just when I needed her. Now, it was my turn to become the man she needed and a husband she could rely on.
