I’ve kidnapped the wrong man.

Chapter 5

Eleanor looked aroundthe dance floor. People were having a great time, the lights sparkled, Christmas music poured from hidden speakers, people were smiling and laughing, and the atmosphere was just perfect.

She would have thought it couldn’t have gotten better and would have bet that nothing could ruin the evening.

But she would have been wrong.

Sally had gone ahead with her crazy plan, and not only gone ahead with it, but had kidnapped the wrong man.

If that wasn’t bad enough, she panicked and was even now driving back to the barn dance, leaving the man locked in the back room of the shed.

She’d stopped answering Eleanor’s texts, so Eleanor assumed she was driving.

Her last text said she was scared to open the door because she was afraid the man would get mad at her and hurt her, even though Franklin had never been violent with anyone that Eleanor knew of.

Sally had grown up with an abusive father, so it made sense to Eleanor that she was scared.

It didn’t make sense to her that she had driven away from the cabin completely though.

Surely she could stay and at least keep the man company until Eleanor managed to get there.

She finally found her mother in the crowd and walked toward her, focused and thankful that no one tried to stop her to chat.

“I need to leave for a bit, Mom.”

Her mom, standing behind the raffle table where everyone was buying tickets for the big Christmas cookie tray giveaway, where proceeds went to the Blueberry Beach humane society, looked up in surprise.

“You’re leaving? Are you okay? Are you sick?” Her mom poured the questions out, the way a seasoned mother would do, her brow furrowed in concern, knowing that Eleanor had put a lot of work into making the barn dance a success and wouldn’t be leaving for a small reason.

“I just have something I need to do. I probably won’t be gone long, but don’t worry about me. I can’t really tell you what’s going on, it has to do with Sally.”

Her mother’s lips formed an “O,” and she started nodding in understanding. Sally had created more than a few issues Eleanor had had to straighten out over the years.

“All right. But I want a full report as soon as you’re able to say.”
