He got a drink of water from the bottle that sat on the floor before he came over and slipped back under the covers.

“It gets cool pretty fast once the fire burns down,” he said, resuming the place that he had right up against her back.

“I really miss your heat when you are gone, I can’t imagine how it must have felt to get out of the covers.”

“I guess I could add that to my list of things I think they need to fix if they do this again. They need to choose a place where there is insulation, and it doesn’t get quite so cold.”

“Again, I think that probably serves their purposes. If she had gotten Peter in here with Norma Jean the way she wanted to, she would want them snuggled up together.”

“I wonder if they talked to Peter at all. I kind of think that he might have been concerned about finding me. At the very least, I’d expect him to be a little bit worried. I don’t usually disappear without saying anything to anyone.”

“I’m sure everyone knew. In fact, it would shock me if they didn’t.”

Chapter 11

Lena looked aroundwith a smile at the inside of the barn. In all her years in Strawberry Sands, she’d never dreamed they’d have a dance like this. Or that her daughter Eleanor, of all people, would be the one to spearhead the majority of it.

Of course, Eleanor had had a whole army of helpers, but considering what Eleanor had gone through as a late teen and early adult, the anxiety that she struggled with, and the victory she finally had over it, Lena couldn’t be happier.

“I think we have a problem, Mom,” Sunday said as she stopped beside her. It was the first time that evening Lena had seen Sunday without Noah beside her. The two had been inseparable since earlier that year, and since their marriage, it was like they’d become attached or something.

Lena was so happy to see it. It thrilled her soul to see her daughters, and her sons, making smart choices about their life partners. Unlike her.

As always, a small feeling of sadness went through her at the thought of her failed marriage, her cheating husband, and the years she’d spent alone, raising her children by herself.

That hadn’t been the plan. Not her plan anyway. The Lord had seen her through it all. And she couldn’t fault Him at all. But still, there was a little piece of her that wished she had had that for herself. A life partner. Someone to walk through the trials and tribulations that beset humans on this planet. Someone to share her joys and her sorrows. Someone to share the workload. To share the fun times too. Someone to whisper to late at night when she woke up with something on her mind. Someone to talk to when she couldn’t sleep. Someone to smile at over her morning coffee.

But that hadn’t been her lot in life, and she tried to be grateful anyway. Her life had been a good one.

Not that it was over. Far from over. But Noah was buying the bed-and-breakfast, the sale would be final in March, and she would be an employee, rather than a business owner.

Their deal had been that she would get the little bungalow that Clara had spent a lot of time in before she got married.

Lena was a little bit sad at moving out of the bed-and-breakfast, and Sunday and Noah had not insisted on it at all. In fact, they wanted her to stay.

But sometimes in order to step through a new door, a person had to leave the spot they were in.
