She ducked her head, and he could imagine that her cheeks were a cute color of pink.
“It’s getting light out. It’s still snowing. At least it was when I was up. I opened the door to check.”
“The cat?” she asked, lifting her head up to look into the far corner.
“She was sleeping with her kittens. I ran my hand over them, and they all felt warm.”
“That’s good to know,” she said on a sigh.
It was getting slightly lighter, although it probably would never be like daylight inside the cabin since there were only two windows. And today would be darker than normal days, because of the snow and the clouds.
“I think this was supposed to stop by dinnertime.”
“I think it was. I heard a couple of cars, so the road must be passable, but nobody stopped. I think, if we really needed to, we could have gone out and stood by the road and flagged someone down.”
“A snowplow at the very least. I heard a couple of those go by.”
“Me too. Maybe that’s why no one is really concerned about us. But it’s comforting to know if it had been absolutely necessary, we could have gotten ourselves out of here.”
“I’m happy with our decision to stay though. I hope you don’t regret it. I really am sorry for throwing myself at you.”
“You didn’t. And you might have missed it, but my arm was around you too. It was warmer that way.”
“All right. I guess I’m still a bit embarrassed, but if you insist.”
“I do.” He took a breath. “Before we get started with the things that we need to do,” he said, thinking that they needed to bring more wood in, they needed to go outside and use the restroom, and he was hungry as well and thirsty, “I wanted to ask you something.”
“Okay?” she said, sounding a little bit more awake and relaxed. Like she’d accepted the fact that it wasn’t her fault that they’d ended up snuggled up together.
“Do you remember the phone call I told you about, and the gala I talked about, and how I don’t have a date for it?”
“Yeah?”
He realized his heart was beating fast and his hands had started to sweat. He really cared about her answer.
“Would you be interested in going with me?”
