“Your actions—the fact that you had someone else lined up and were going to replace her if she just said the word—said you didn’t.”

He didn’t mean to argue. He just...wished it wasn’t so obvious now. What had been obscure to him before. He had been surprised, he supposed, and that’s maybe why he didn’t make the best decision that he could have.

He didn’t know what else to blame it on. Maybe he wasn’t supposed to blame it on anything. Maybe he was supposed to take the blame for it, admit it, and then...what?

“I screwed up.”

“I think that’s the first step in fixing things,” Peter said easily.

“What’s the next step?” Franklin said, laughing a little. That was his problem. He didn’t know what to do to fix it.

“I don’t know. I guess apologizing.”

“Yeah. Okay, that makes sense.” Definitely he needed to apologize. He was an idiot. But maybe it hadn’t hurt her feelings as much as he thought. If she had done to him what he just did to her, it definitely would have upset him and hurt his feelings. Even if they’d only been friends, and here he was hoping for more. Not that he would have admitted it to anyone.

“Then what?”

“Man, I don’t know,” Peter said, sounding exasperated and amused at the same time. “I’m not married. Maybe that’s why. I guess... I guess you just need to try to show her that you’re going to try to do better. I mean, you can say it, but until she actually sees you trying to do something better? It doesn’t really mean anything, you know? Anybody can apologize. Although some people don’t. And anybody can say they’re going to try to do better. Just like anybody can say thank you. It’s just a matter of...showing your thanks.”

Great, now he had to try to figure out how to show that he was actually remorseful. But how did he do that? It wasn’t like he could drum up another situation where he had to choose between Eleanor and someone else and he would choose Eleanor.

Man, he had a golden opportunity to show her how much he thought of her, and he’d screwed it up.

Still, he figured Peter was right. He just needed to watch for the opportunity and, in the meantime, do his best to show her that he was remorseful and that she truly did mean something to him.

It bothered him that she wasn’t going to be at his gala and hadn’t wanted to go out with him again. But he could try to run into her in other situations, until maybe she changed her mind.

He hoped that would work, since he couldn’t think of anything else, and he hadn’t realized until that point how much he liked Eleanor.

Chapter 17

“Do you think I’m wrong?” Eleanor asked Sunday as they got in the elevator to go up to their hotel rooms.

Noah had a meeting, although he was going to be along later. For the moment, it was just the two of them, and Eleanor had all of Sunday’s attention.

But Sunday had been quiet, thoughtful, and that had made Eleanor start thinking about how she’d handled things.
