“Yes, but not on campus,” Jamie said seriously. “Anyhow, how did you find out?”

“Aled told me the two of you were reunited when I called to check in on the family,” he said.”

Jamie found himself glad that Kit was looking out for Aled after what he’d learned about Aled’s parents.

“There’s still an entire minefield of ethical concerns and university policy to navigate before I would even feel comfortable disclosing any sort of relationship with a student,” he said.

Even saying those words sent a shiver down Jamie’s spine and had him glancing in all directions to see if anyone who shouldn’t be was close enough to overhear the conversation.

“Hmm,” Kit said. “I hadn’t stopped to think that through.”

Jamie smirked. “Why would you ever stop to think? Doesn’t the world just fall at your feet, no matter what whim takes you?”

Kit laughed his loud, joyful laugh, and Jamie swore he heard some of the sheep echo the sound. In fact, Kit had probably learned that laugh from his livestock.

“You’ve got that right,” he said. “But no, I’m certain you and Aled will work things out. Anyone with eyes could see that the two of you are perfect for each other.”

“Yes, well,” Jamie said, hunching in on himself a little, glancing around furtively, and lowering his voice, “spending a weekend at someone’s feet, letting them turn your body into a work of abstract art through the medium of pain is a great deal different than openly dating a student. There are reasons these things are frowned upon.”

“Why, because you might take advantage of an innocent, young mind?” Kit asked, sarcasm thick in his voice.

Jamie tilted his head to the side. Kit had a point there. The rule against faculty fraternizing with students was mostly to prevent older, predatory professors from taking advantage of naïve, young students. He’d had that talk with a few of the fresh-faced, impressionable souls under his academic care in the years since he’d started working at the university.

Aled was an entirely different sort of student, though. After he’d left his office the day before, Jamie had done a bit of quick digging and found a bit more information about the death of Aled’s parents. He’d only picked at the subject a little before discovering it was too horrific for him to dig deeper. Aled and his siblings had been through something that most people could never imagine.

That changed a person. It either destroyed them mentally or gave them a preternatural strength that matured them. He was only guessing, but from what Jamie knew so far, he was certain Aled was more mature than any of his fellow students, and probably half the university’s faculty as well. And if what he remembered overhearing during the weekend was right, Aled’s sister’s mental health was still suffering.

“I think you know as well as I do that Aled isn’t an ordinary uni student,” Jamie said with sudden seriousness. He glanced to his watch and noticed he would be late for the meeting he was heading to if he didn’t get a wiggle on, so he started walking again as he spoke. “I haven’t once felt any sort of age difference between us.”

“That’s because you’re a confirmed sub, and Aled is, as I have said all along, a natural, strong dom,” Kit said.

“I agree with you wholeheartedly on that score,” Jamie said, stepping into the administration building and nodding thanks at the smiling student who respectfully held the door for him.

Of course, now that he was in a building crawling with people, he couldn’t say anything to add to that. There were far too many ears around him, and the administration building held the offices of the people at the university who would take exception to how he liked to spend his leisure time.

“I need to go,” he told Kit. “I’m on my way to a meeting of the fundraising committee.”

“The university has a fundraising committee?” Kit asked incredulously. “Don’t funds just materialize from students and their wealthy parents?”

Jamie laughed. “Everyone has a fundraising committee these days,” he said. “You’d be surprised how narrow the margin is at most institutes of higher learning. We all have to beg for our bread somehow.”

“And you are so very good at begging,” Kit said, his voice almost campy.

Jamie chuckled, but felt himself flushing hot. “Not now, Kit,” he teased right back, glancing at a group of excited students as he passed them. “Not in front of the children.”

Kit laughed, the sheep behind him bleated, and he said, “Right, well, I have to tend to these lovely ladies. I’ll see you next time I’m in London. We’ll have supper at The Chameleon Club or something.”

“I’d love to,” Jamie said, turning the corner to a quieter corridor and heading down to the meeting room where the committee was to meet. “And Kit? Thank you from the bottom of my subby heart for finding Aled and bringing him to me.”

He could practically feel Kit gloating on the other end of the line. “My pleasure,” he said. “And if your new dom is willing to share you, then you can thank me on your knees.”

“Ha ha,” Jamie said, grinning and shaking his head. “Bye, Kit.”

Kit told him goodbye, and Jamie pulled the phone away from his ear to end the call as he turned the corner and walked into the meeting room. Even though he’d spoken to Kit and not Aled, he felt warm and sensual because of everything they’d discussed. He knew he was blushing, that everyone would see it and guess something was up, but that tiny twist of potential humiliation only fed the parts of his psyche that made him feel alive.

And then he glanced up, still smiling, and spotted Ronny standing at the other end of the room.

It was like someone exploded a bomb of ice shards that sliced through him, stealing all the warmth and contentment he’d been feeling. Worse still was the immediate, possessive smile that spread across Ronny’s face at the sight of him.
