“You’re a lot like Lydia,” Tristian said, his eyes moving to the ceiling as a light fog covered them. “She made us a lot of money that year. The snide comments to the cameras were one thing, but that love triangle?” He let out a sharp whistle. “People ate that shit up.”

Ihadseen it. After she died, I’d gone to look at all her footage.

Another slap to the fucking face. To watch her pine for Hiram when my dad was right fucking there.

“A lot of people compare us,” I said, giving him a sickly sweet smile. “Butunlikeher,I have no problem continuing my winning streakoutsidethe games.”

His gaze darted to mine, holding my stare. I could see it weighing on his mind. Thinking about whether it was a better idea to get rid of me or keep me on a leash.

“Oh, the money you will make,” he said with a laugh.

“Then give it to us,” Kohl growled. “Stop fucking around.”

“Alright! Fine, I think I have the perfect plan,” he said. “One that will guarantee you money for the rest of your life and get us more viewers than we’ve ever had. Just say yes, and I’ll get you everything you need.”

The leash it was.

I looked at Kohl, but they were already staring at me.

“After the next event, we’re gone,” they said, their eyes darting from me to Tristan. “I’d like to be homebeforemy brother’s body starts decomposing.”

He let out a laugh that made the hair stand on the back of my neck.

Disgusting.

I tried to search Kohl’s face to check if there was any lingering hurt, but there was too much going on and not enough time.

“That Icanpromise you,” he said, standing and buttoning his crisp suit jacket. “Sign the contract, and you have yourselves a deal.”

A tablet with a digital version of the contract was forced under our noses. I looked it over, and it outlined exactly what we’d agreed on. No more, no less.

Suspiciously bare.

I looked at Kohl.

“Are you really okay with signing your life away?” I asked.

“Just one more game,” they whispered. “One more game and you’ll finally get the life youdeserve.”

The sincerity in their voice made my heart pound in my chest.

Looking down, I held my breath and used my index finger to sign my name. It showed up with a slight delay, shimmering on the screen.

Kohl took it right after me, not hesitating to write down their name.

The act caused something to flutter inside me. An emotion I hadn’t dared name while we were in the games.

For me. They were doing this all for me.

They didn’t have to go to these lengths. They could’ve just left me here to deal with this on my own.

Iwas the one threatening to pull the trigger.

If they wanted to, they could probably just say they didn’t want anything to do with me—and because of Hiram’s position, they might’ve just let them go.

But they didn’t.

They signed those papers with me.For me.
