Billy Murphy.Seasoned enough to know that no matter what my family name was, I wouldn’t go running to Daddy. But stupid enough to think I’d take it lying down.

He was taking every advantage he could, failing to consider what would happen if I decided thatnothingwas worth—

Remember who you’re doing this for.

But my problem wasn’t remembering. There wasn’t a second that went by that I didn’t think about what happened to her. Where I wasn’t trying to come up with a plan on how to help.

That’s how I ended up here, as a fucking errand boy to the Jackals. They weren’t even a high-level gang. It was fuckingpathetic.

The problem was my own damned pride.

It was becoming more andmoreobvious that I needed to find money somewhere I wouldn’t be getting my ass kicked on the regular.

I couldn’t sit through beating after beating in some dirty back alley for some fucking pocket change. It wasinsulting. And not just because my allowance had been twice the pennies they offered me since I wasseven. But because I deserved to be treated like a human, damn it.If I wanted to be treated like a show pony I would’ve just sold my soul and joined the games from the start.

The urge to stagger to my feet and slam my fist into Murphy’s ugly, unshaved face was beginning to gnaw at the dwindling threads of my patience.

“I’m not going to fucking ask again, Kohl.”

I gritted my teeth so hard my jaw ached, taking a deep breath through my nose. My raw fingertips dug into the gravel painfully as I bowed my head, keeping my eyes locked on the slate pebbles beneath me.

My body shuddered with the force of my restraint—barely keeping myself curled in front of him, my bruised ribs searing with every breath of musty, garbage-filled air.

“I’m sorry, sir,” I said, making sure my voice carried. The words sent a wave of nausea through me as they crossed my taste buds.

Fuck you, slime.

His gnarled hand ruffled the top of my bottle blonde hair—anything I could do to look less like my family. Pain flashed through my head as he dug his nails into my scalp.

It was the last straw.

His grubby, sweaty, filthyhands set off an explosion through me.

I jerked my head up, looking him square in the face. The crazed smile I’d been holding in spread across my face, stretching my cheeks until they ached. I let all the anger and frustration inside me bubble in my chest, making my body shake with anticipation and my fists clench.

“Damn,” I said with a sigh that almost sounded remorseful. “I really wish I could’ve held out for just a bit longer.”

Murphy’s eyes widened, his lips parting as he realized I’d finally had enough. Before he could utter a single word, I sprung at him like a cobra, ignoring my aching body in favor of colliding with his round torso.

The world moved in slow motion around me, and his cronies left without so much as a second to react as I toppled their fauxleader.

Murphy’s steel-gray eyes widened comically as he tried to evade my raising fist. A futile move, but one I understood.

What I didn’t understand was how they could really think I would just lie there and take their bullshit. They hadn’t counted on just howsuicidalI could be.

Sure, beating this fucking dipshit into a pulp would ruin my chance at securing this job, but I’d find another.

I’m sorry, my goddess. I’m so sorry. I promise I'll make it up to you in another way.

Hold on for me.

My fist slammed into the left side of Murphy’s jaw, the same place mine was still aching. I couldn’t help the laugh that slipped from my lips as his head snapped to the side.

Shouts echoed around us as people spurred into action, but I was able to ram my fist into the fuckers nose before multiple pairs of hands yanked me away.

“Come on, you little bitch! Can’t you fight your own battles? Now that I’m not sitting pretty, you’rescared, aren’t you?”

Murphy cupped his bloodied nose, glaring daggers at me. But my view of him was short-lived as his men surrounded me.
