Page 11 of Don't Hate Me

Ross, my boss, was a man past his prime who still held onto his position with an iron grip. I didn’t hate the dude, not in the slightest. What I felt toward him was more like… an annoyed indifference.

Especially when he was treatingme, one of his best agents, like a child.

It was no secret that I was good at my job. Even in the less important jobs that I had been in, I always found myself with glowing performance reviews from both colleagues and clients.

And it wasn’t like that just because I had a natural affinity for this job.

I worked my ass off. Every morning, if I wasn’t hitting the gym, I was going for a run. I kept myself in peak physical condition while also making sure to hone my skills.

So being called in like I was in trouble for something didn’t sit right with me.

“It’s been all but two weeks since you started with Senator Bennett,” my boss growled. “Why am I hearing about late-night excursions?”

My ears burned.Shit.

And here I thought he had called me for something unnecessary. This is a hundred times worse than what I thought it was.I had tried my best to be careful about being unseen, especially when I wanted to go out to the club. My job and life depended on it.

It had been easier when I was working with the former president’s wife. More relaxed. They were both in their eighties, and no one cared too much about them anymore. But with Senator Bennett’s bid for president, I guess the surveillance was doubled, and not just for the man and his family.

I could easily lie it off. Tell them some made-up story… but honestly, some version of the truth may be the safest bet. As long as I didn’t spill about Bailey, I would be fine.

Because of mysituationand my role in the agency, each long-term partner I had was required to go through a background check and their name would forever be next to mine on some file.

And it’s not that I hadn’t been having fun with Bailey, especially when it first started out, but I just wasn’t ready to take that step. It was a serious one that needed serious consideration. Something that didn’t seem worth it with Bailey.

Jesus, can you sound any more like an asshole?

“Honestly, sir… I go out to get laid,” I said after a moment.

My boss’s entire face pinched before he let out a loud sigh and fell back into his chair. He face had a brush or red on his cheeks and tips of his ears. He looked out of the window, obviously trying to collect himself. It had been six years since I joined the Secret Service. Four of those years had been under this boss, and never once had we had an issue.

But that was because I had never been surveilled in such a way before, so now he was about to know things about me that he wished he never had.

Everything besides this, I had been painfully honest with him about. My situation. My home life. My fears. All of it helped me convince him to keep me out of sight and on the less important projects.

Until now.He turned back to me with a bunched facial expression.

“Can you at least be more discreet?” he asked, his voice exasperated. “I’m no fool, and neither is the team. I get that agents have… needs, but just do so quietly, got it?”

I nodded. “Yes, sir.”

Though what I really wanted to say was,“I thought I was.”

When I didn’t move, he looked up at me with a raised brow.

I shifted on my feet. I had been planning to bring this up to him for a while now, and I guess now was as good a time as any, though I wished it was under a less humiliating circumstance.

“I don’t want to seem ungrateful for this opportunity…”

“Not a great way to start off the conversation, then.”

I winced.God, this is already embarrassing enough.

“You and I are both aware of my…situation,” I said, lowering my voice. “Working with the senator is a great opportunity, but just…why did you—“

“Put you in a place so visible?” he finished for me.

I nodded. Not just visible. There’s a fucking spotlight on me.If I didn’t know any better, I would say he was trying to sabotage me. Even the house speaker was pushing it, but this fucker was going to be televised soon, meaning there was a chance I would be too.
