He gave me a forced smile.

“Is he not someone you worry about?” he asked with a light shake in his tone.

Ryan, someone who had been a leader in our team and who should have been afraid ofno one,had shown an awful lot of fear for a mere politician.

One whose campaign still hadn’t taken off.

“I protect him,” I said, walking toward him. “Not fear him.”

I met his gaze strongly. I had so much more I wanted to say. I wanted to tell him to toughen up. To realize that the senator was just a job. One that would be done before he knew it.

Most of all, I wanted to tell him how disappointed I was.

But he wasn’t worth the time. Even though I knew soon I’d never see him again, I still couldn’t bring myself to let the words slip from my mouth. No matter how bitter they tasted on my tongue.

“He’s in his study,” he said, his gaze darting to the family and staying there.

I see I’m dismissed.

I walked past him with a huff. Whatever, if he wanted to act like that, then I wouldn’t stop him.

The house was toasty as I walked through it. Almost unbearably so. But it was still. All the agents were in their stations and out of sight, the children’s voices muffled by the walls.

My footsteps were loud as I made my way toward his office. I paused and I knocked when I got to his door. His gruff command to come in was just audible over the soft music spilling out of his room.

Opening the door, I peeked my head in before stepping in.

Mr. Bennett met me with a smile, his glasses hanging on for dear life at the edge of his nose. Before him there was paperwork sprawled on his desk. His computer was open but pushed to the side.

The room was even warmer than the house, though he wore loose pants and a t-shirt while I had to force myself into the stuffy suit.

“You needed me, sir?” I asked.

“Yes, come in, Tiffany,” he said, motioning for me to shut the door, but I left it wide open and walked forward. His gaze traveled back to the door before looking at me with a raised brow.

“Just for some air,” I said with a smile. His notice of me not closing the door didn’t sit right with me.

“Ah yes,” he said and leaned back in his chair. “I just wanted to check in on you. I heard you were in some… trouble?”

“It’s taken care of now, sir,” I said, trying not to shift under his gaze. “I appreciate you checking in on me.”

“Of course,” he said, taking his glasses off before placing them on the desk. “Just noticed you were gone, and when they told me about how someone had broken into your house, you can’t help but worry, right?”

My blood froze in my veins. No one should have known the details of what happened besides the team that was assigned to me by witness protection and my boss.

“Who told you that?” The words were out of my mouth before I could stop them.

He didn’t seem taken aback by the harshness of my words. He just merely smiled and motioned to the door behind me.

“Maybe now you would like to close the door?”

I don’t know what it was in that moment that caused my skin to crawl. His gaze remained fixated on my face. The room was well lit, and he stayed seated.

There was nothing in his voice that told me that I should be afraid… but I was.

All my hair stood on end, and the murmurs in the back of my head were telling me to make my escape.

Fuck that. There was no way he could get me into a locked room with him and away from the rest of the people in this house.
