Hand-picked to get the attention of our target. While it didn’t seem like the agent had a specific type, my agency somehow knew exactly what would appeal to her about me.

I only wished that they would have given me a better heads-up beforehand. Any other job, I would have had at least ten more pages of what they wanted from me, but besides the files on her history and habits, there were barely any instructions for me.

They were hiding something, that much was obvious. But why they felt the need to hide it from their best agent was still something I couldn’t quite understand.

Maybe this was some type of punishment.

They somehow knew that I would be the perfect person to draw her in, but I wondered briefly if they knew whatshewould do tome. How much her erotic displays would cause my insides to twist and my mouth to water… or if they even planned it.

If Rolf did, I would make sure to put a bullet in his shin before my next job.

After the first night, when I realized what this job was doing to me, I had pulled back. I didn’t allow myself to go back to the club for about two weeks while I staked out her current residence and learned everything I could about the people she interacted with.

It was in the quiet suburbs of New York, not far from the club but close enough to her current assignment that she could be there in under five minutes.

The people watching her only added to the complexity of it all. But it wasn’t just her, it was her entire building actually. Everyone coming and going was being duly cataloged by them. They had caught me by surprise at first.

It was a miracle I didn’t kill them.

I blamed her new job with the senator. Something I would have to deal with sooner rather than later.

I questioned whether or not I should get in contact with Avery Maddox again. One of the single most annoying contacts of my life. She was the daughter of a slimy billionaire who got a hard-on from blackmail.

Evidently, it ran in the family, and I owed her too many favors.

But I thought better of it. The less she knew, the better.

So now, with no way into Blake’s house, I was forced to go back to the club.

Luckily, she was often performing, so I could sneak in while she was busy, though it was like she could feel my presence. Almost as soon as I stepped in, her eyes would always find me.

Once or twice, it was a coincidence. But after I started coming back over a week’s time, two weeks’ time? By the sixth visit, I realized that she had looked for me in the crowd.

Now on my twelfth time to the club, I went to the normal room only to see a different performer take the stage. My fingers dug into the cool glass.

I had seen her leave. I knew she had to be here… right? Where else would she have gone at this time of night?

Confusion filled me along with annoyance.

Where the fuck was she?

I took a deep breath, held it, then let it out.

Track.

Assess.

Engage.

Terminate.

I was still between assess and engage even after months of tracking her. Way behind schedule compared to how my jobs usually go. It only added to the frustration that had been boiling under my skin.

I repeated the words over and over again in my head.Track. Assess. Engage. Terminate. Track. Assess. Engage. Terminate. Track. Assess. Engage. Termina—

Cursing under my breath, I threw the drink back. The alcohol burned as it went down, but it was the thing I needed to get my mind straight.

With a lingering look at the newest performer on stage, I turned to leave the room. Heat prickled at my skin, and a muted shock burned my chest. She’s here.
