My eyes traveled Jonson’s face. He seemed sosure. Was there some actual bribery going on that he can attest to once he has the senator in custody?

“Hotel?” Mrs. Bennett asked with her eyebrows pulled together. “What hotel? He has been at home. I can attest to that.”

“Ah,” Jonson said as he exhaled. “Don’t act like you haven’t benefited from it as well. I could have sworn I saw a brand-new Mercedes parked outside. One which isn’t on your or your husbands bank statement.”

“What are you on about? It was agift.” Mrs. Bennett said, standing. I moved to her side, placing my hands on her shoulders. She sent me a pleading look.

“Sit,” I whispered. “You don’t want to make this worse than it is.”

“But they are insinuating—”

“There is no insinuation here. Just a completely normal, non-suspicious meeting between your husband and a fewpeople who have a deep pockets and something to gain by bribing your husband,” Jonson said. “SoRyan, that is why your agents are under arrest. Even if it isstolen,as the dealer says. They saw him take it, and one already confessed to seeing him order another agent to commit the crime while he watched. No whether that crime is bribery or robbery, we can see find that out in trial, hm?”

Ryan straightened his suit, then nodded. It was obvious on his face how much he didn’t like this. The whole situation didn’t sit right with me.

“Understood,” he said. “We hope to have eyes on your report in the morning.”

Shock ran through me at how easily he accepted it.That was it?He was just going to accept that they had taken them and let them go?

“Mrs. Bennett, we will probably call you down for questioning,” Jonson warned and motioned for the man behind him to leave. “We have a few more pieces of evidence to collect here, but we should be out of here soon.”

My eyes were trained on Ryan, as there was something he wasn’t saying. What had he seen out there?

Jonson nodded toward him before turning on his heels and leaving. Ryan didn’t come to my side until he was fully out of view.

“We can’t do anything about the agents,” he said, keeping his voice low. “They fucked up, and that’s on them. Per Mr. Bennett, he has no idea why those jewels were there and blames it on the agents. Saying that they probably targeted the arts dealer and planted it on him. But I know for afacthe won’t sit in that interrogation room for more than five minutes.”

My gaze shifted to his.

“He won’t?” I asked, trying to keep my voice low. “Even if all the agents point to him?”

The muscles in Ryan’s jaw clenched. He was obviously just as unhappy with the idea as I was.

“You know by now how this works,” he said. “Just be cautious out there, okay? You were lucky you were off duty that day. Going forward, if you see anything suspicious, let me know, okay?”

I nodded, unable to find any other words to describe what I was feeling.

I knew the senator was powerful… but even putting the crimes on his own secret service agents?

My entire body froze when I saw the man of the hour sauntering through the house as if he wasn’t just forced into the back of a cop car.

He had a cocky grin on his face, and his eyes traveled over the various law enforcement officers in the room before they came to rest on mine. His smile fell just slightly before it was plastered back on his face.

The light in his eyes was gone, and behind that smile, I had no doubt that inside he was fuming.

God fucking dammit, why couldn’t I stay anywhere less noticeable?

Quinn

It didn’t fucking work.

“What do you mean he’s not getting charged?” I growled into the phone.

“I mean what I said,” Avery said from the other line. There was a bit of annoyance in her tone as well.

“You said he would handle this,” I reminded her. “Ineededhim to handle this.”

“Jonson had planted it perfectly,” she said, her voice dropping to a whisper. “Even went so far as bribing the secret service agents to conspire against him, but still—”
