“Nope,” I said and leaned back into the couch. “I can reply later.”

“Is it the target?”

I pursed my lips, unable to help the uncomfortableness that spread throughout my body. “Yes.”

“Let me see—”

“No,” I said far too quickly. There was a silence between us. Rolf shifted, causing me to tense up and get ready for a fight. “I have it handled. Don’t interfere.”

Rolf let out a bitter laugh.

“If you had it handled, you wouldn’t fucking be here,” he said, shaking his head.

Nowthatgot my attention.

“What do you mean?” I asked. “I have been doing my job. Getting close to her. What am I missing?”

“It will be five months since you’ve successfully infiltrated the club and made contact,” he said. “Even longer since you’ve had the job. The rate this is going is unacceptable.”

“And you should remember that this job came with not one buttwocomplications. Not only did I have to murder her obsessivefuck toy, but she is assigned to a fucking presidential candidate. You even told me this would be a longer job, so I am not sure why I am here.” I growled. “Ijustgot invited to her apartment after cleaning up the mess you forced me into. How do you expect me to get all the information in such a short amount of time?”

Rolf shook his head and let out a bitter laugh.

“Short amount of time? Agent, this is the longest job you have ever been on. I knew I should have sent someone who was better at seduction.”

Anger boiled under my skin. What the fuck happened within the few months that I had taken this job? Did someone say something? Was there a change of plans from the client? Sure, this was longer than usual, but I thought we were all on the same page.

“Seduction isn’t the issue,” I hissed. “You have to be kidding me, Rolf. What the fuck is this about? We both knew it would take a long time, which is why I am also taking small side jobs. Did you forget about that?”

His jaw twitched, and he let out a huff.

“I didn’t forget,” he said.

“So what changed?” I pushed, leaning forward. “This isn’t about me, is it?”

His eyes searched mine.Finally.I was getting somewhere. The child inside me rejoiced. Iknewhe wasn’t going to call me in here for any of this bullshit.

Maybe he too was under pressure from the client. That’s the only reason I could think as to why Rolf would act like this.

A ping from his phone pulled both of our attention to it. It was face up on the desk and lit up when the message came in. From my spot I couldn’t make out the message, but Rolf’s body language told me it was someone important.

Rolf’s entire demeanor changed to that of my stern handler once more. One step forward, two fucking steps back.

“It’s the client,” he said as he picked up his phone. “He wanted to speak with you.”

My heart seized in my chest. Directly? The client wanted to speak tome?

Was this Alec Crowe? It had been bothering me since I saw the name in the files.

I had done my best to try and research exactly how they could be connected, but I came up with nothing.

He put the phone on speaker as it dialed the number. It took a few rings to pick up, but when he did, it was silent.

“I have the agent here with me,” Rolf said, placing the phone down. “Feel free to speak your mind.”

Rolf’s gaze pinned me to my spot. It was his warning that I better act right or I would join the others that had been decommissioned on this very couch.

“I’m disappointed,” the man on the other line said. His voice was low, a bit husky, but overall calm and not at all as angry-sounding as I thought he would be. I tried to commit the voice to memory, the only clue I had about him. “I pay you good money, and yet she still isn’t taken care of.”
