Icouldwake her… but that would almost guarantee that she would die with me.

My feet made the decision for me, carrying me out of the room and into the darkened living room.

My eyes scanned the area, searching for whatever it was that called to me, but there was nothing.

A gloved hand covered my mouth as if to stop my scream, but I wouldn’t. No matter how much panic ran through my body, I didn’t want Quinn to wake up at the sound of it.

This was the least I could do for her.

The body behind me was close. So close I could feel the coldness from the outside seep into my clothing.

His other hand slipped into mine to deliver a small, folded paper.

He pulled away slowly, sending shocks through my system.

“Leave her out of it. If you wan—”

“I’m not here to kill you. He wants totalkfirst,” the gruff voice said from behind me.

We both knew Russell didn’t want totalk. He wanted the USB. He wanted to prove his dominance over me. He wantedtoendme.

“There will be a car waiting,” he said. “Don’tbring your guard dog with you.”

He walked around me, giving me a look at a masked face. I squared my shoulders and tilted my chin up, all but daring him to try something.

It was laughable given how unequal we were at the moment. Him in full tactical gear, weapons strapped to his side. Me in an oversized t-shirt, the only weapon is my blunt nails.

“Get out,” I hissed.

I could have sworn I saw the smile in his eyes before he turned and left right out the front door.

Quinn

I’m going to get blacklisted.

I wouldn’t even be surprised if my name was next on the list. Or if it had already been given to one of my colleagues.

I had made my decision, and there was no going back after this.

It was stupid. Insane.

It would cost me everything I had built over my lifetime with my organization.

But it would be worth it in the end, wouldn’t it?

I blamed my impulsiveness on the lack of sleep, but I couldn’t help but feel that instead of it clouding my mind, I had never felt like I could see the end of this so clearly.

It was crazy, but it would work.

It would be because of what they groomed me to be. It would work because never once had they ever expected their perfect little monster to be anything but theirs.

But I have a new owner now.

“How much longer until they give you the okay to leave?” Rolf asked from the other line.

I looked back at Blake, who was sitting on the kitchen counter, eating some peanut butter right out of the container.

Even though her life was in danger, over the last few days, she really shed her anxious skin and learned to love the mundane life we had here. It had been almost a week, and while we got regular food deliveries, we weren’t allowed outside.
