He had to have known. There was no way that the secret service agents had been the only people watching Blake. There were too many, and the ones that flooded her apartment were ones that I had never seen before.

Even after watching her for as long as I did.

Was he there to send a message? There to cause us to go into a panic like this?

“No more dangerous than me, little agent,” I said after a moment. “But we are outnumbered here.”

Her pout caused my chest to ache. She shouldn’t have to worry about this. Shouldn’t have to be as scared as she was.

She tried to hide it, but those eyes of hers were so expressive that there was no hiding just how much this all affected her.

The more I thought of it, the more uncomfortable my chest felt. A low headache pounded in my temples, and the world around me began to spin.

It’s time to rest before you find yourself incapable of protecting her.

“But I do need to take at least a quick nap.” I walked back over to the couch, letting out a sigh as I sank into it. Originally, I thought the couch was janky and uncomfortable, but now it felt like heaven.

Before I knew it, my eyes were fluttering shut.

Blake

For the first time, I felt guilt for employing the tactics I used on my husband to get Quinn asleep.

That bastard deserved it, but all Quinn was trying to do was protect me.

My hand gripped the crumbled note in my pocket.

Leave without calling attention and she lives.

9 p.m. service will be dispersed and you can walk freely out the back.

Bring it.

I had replayed the night he showed over and over again. Trying to figure out exactly how he got past the both of us.

If I hadn’t woken… what would he have done?

All the doors and windows were locked. I made sure to check after he left, but there was no sign of forced entry.

They got past her. In the short time she took to sleep, they got past her.

Not only did they get past her, but Russell somehow had the power to control the Secret Service as he pleased.

Since when did the Crowe family ever have that power? Is that why he was never taken in, even after all the information I had handed over to the FBI?

I knew corruption and greed had worked their way deep into the systems that were designed to protect, but I never realized just how much people were willing to give to be on the Crowes’ good side.

It didn’t take long for her snores to echo throughout the room. The medicine was already working through her system. She needed the sleep. It pained me to see how much she was willing to suffer just to make sure I was safe.

For most of my life, there has been no one to protect me. The people who were supposed to, betrayed me in ways I could never forgive them for.

But Quinn?

She wasn’t supposed to be protecting me like this. She hadn’t outright said it, but I knew her motive for being here.

The USB wasn’t hard to find. She could have taken it at any time and finished me. But she hadn’t.

Maybe Quinn didn’t quite know why she was doing what she was doing as well.
