It’s as though the word ‘warrior’ has lit up something inside him.

But he sighs and shakes his head before he takes a deep breath and continues.

“Each clan has a chieftain. I think. I’m not sure,” he stumbles over his words. “I’m not sure, but I think I was the chieftain of my clan. Or I was close to one, anyway.”

He looks fit to be a chieftain,I consider as I examine him. He is large and muscular and scars crisscross his body from top to toe.

My face heats up and I look down because I know I am blushing.

I clear my throat quietly as Kian continues.

“Each clan sticks to itself. We often go to war with other clans. I know that we came here from somewhere else. Although I don’t know where. I just know that orcs aren’t native to Earth.”

He sits in silence, frowning, and this gives me time to examine him.

I have never been around human males much, but I know the general facts of life from living with the wolves. I know that at some point in my life, I am supposed to find a human male and pair up with him.

According to the gossip I’ve heard at the settlement's trading post, this pairing is supposed to be fun, although I can never tell if the female wolves enjoy the…process. I cock my head to the side as I look at Kian, who is staring into the distance.

Kian isn’t comparable to any human male I have ever seen. I suppose his general anatomy would be the same as a human man’s, but who knows?

The thought makes me blush again, and I look away from him when he turns his head back to me.

“I’m trying to remember,” he murmurs fiercely. He looks almost depressed as he speaks. “I’m trying to remember. There is something I need to remember… Ah!”

He screams then, loudly enough to shake entire flocks of birds out of the trees. The wolves all start to howl as Kian doubles over with pain.

I jump up and grab his wrists as he starts to hit his forehead.

“Stop.” I use the firm tone of voice that I use when the pups are being naughty. It works, and he calms slightly, shuddering. “Stop. You don’t have to force yourself to remember. You can always try again later.”

I let go of his wrists and turn to get some more of the healing tincture that I cooked up while he was asleep.

But he grabs my hand as I turn away from him.

“Please.” The word comes out in a gasp. “Don’t leave me.”

I turn back reluctantly to look at him, and my heart starts to thud erratically at the sight of his bright blue eyes looking at me with pure need in them.

I shiver as a combination of panic and an emotion I cannot name races up my spine.

I suppress a small groan as we look at one another. I do not think he is conscious of it, but he is tracing the back of my hand with his thumb.

I pull back and almost stumble away from him as heat burns off my skin.

Kian looks at me, confused by my actions.

Guess what. I’m as confused as you. Am I in heat?

I am a human woman, not a fucking female wolf. How could I possibly be experiencing the heat that they do?

But this is the only thing that makes sense.

And yet, it doesn’t.
