“What edge?” She sounds almost curious.

How can I explain this edge that only exists in my mind? It is an edge that she cannot see or feel or experience. And yet it is very real, and very dangerous if she is not careful. If I am not careful.

She lifts her hands and places both palms on my chest then. I shudder underneath her touch.

Then, suddenly, as if to give us some privacy, the already dim light of the moon vanishes completely.

The sky is dark, leaving us in darkness, but it doesn’t matter, because I have now memorized every line and crevice of Amara’s face.

“If only.” I swallow a groan when she strokes her hands down my chest. “If only you knew what you were doing to me.”

I have to let go. This isn’t right. I might be the orc who takes whatever he wants. I might be the orc who is a warrior. But I can’t do this to Amara. Not to the woman who saved my life.

I lift my hands carefully, slowly, from her hips. Then I lift her hands from my chest, and I step away from her.

I take several more steps away from her, so that there is a good distance between us, and I take several deep breaths as I run a hand through my hair.

I don’t turn around. I don’t dare to look at her, because I know that if I do, I will be lost.

I think it’s too late. You’re already lost.

When Amara touches me, I almost jump a foot into the air. She threads her fingers through mine and pulls me towards her.

I am surprised, like always, at Amara’s strength.

“I’m sorry,” I tell her. I hope she isn’t going to tell me that I should leave her and the pack completely after my actions. “I didn’t mean to touch you like that.”

A faint smile crosses her face, and Amara shakes her head slightly. Then she looks away, biting her lip like she is thinking long and hard.

“Kian.” I shudder again when she says my name. If I don’t stop her, this isn’t going to end well for me. “Kian.” Her voice is breathy and dark.

“Yes?” My voice is gruff, and I know then that I am barely in control of whatever I do next.

“What do you want to do to me?” Her voice is almost innocent. Curious. As if she doesn’t know what I want.

And maybe she doesn’t. She spends all her time in the forest, surrounded by animals. She was literally raised by wolves. Does she have any experience with males?

The thought that Amara might have previous experience with other males inflames me, but then I remember that she probably doesn’t know anything. How could she? She seems to loathe going to the human settlement.

The thought gives me hope. It will mean that she will be completely mine. And no one else’s.

“What do you want to do to me?” she asks me again, and her voice has changed. It is low and deep and dark and so inviting that I have to take another step away from her.

What will you be doing to her, if you really think she has no experience with males? What will you be doing to her, if she has never even been with a human man? You’re an orc! What will you be taking away from her?

My thoughts are tumultuous, but then all control falls away when Amara repeats the question with a kind of demanding finality.

“Kian, what do you want to do to me?”

It sounds like an invitation. Like this time, she might know what I want.

I’m already lost.

I grab her by the waist and pull her towards me. Her arms go to my chest and then around my neck as our lips meet.

Oh, Gods. I never want this to end.

Her mouth is soft and sweet and inviting, and I never want to let go of her.
