“Oh, shit,” Louise stammers. “We were just—”

“I’m not blind,” I assure her coldly. “Both of you can gather your things and get the hell out of my building. You’re fired.”

“But, no, just—”

“You can’t—”

“Oh, yes, I can. And I just did. You have five minutes to get the hell out before I have you escorted out. And Louise, you might want to let your husband know what kind of woman he’s married to.”

“Don’t tell him.” With wild eyes, she runs to me and grabs onto the lapels of my suit jacket.

I raise a brow and stare down at her hands until she lets go.

“Please don’t tell him. It’s just an office romance.”

“I thought we were in love,” Patrick interrupts, bordering on whining.

“I don’t give a shit what you are. Get out. Now.”

“But—”

“I will not say it again.” I turn cold eyes on both of them. “You thought you could take advantage and disrespect me like this? You thought wrong. Goodbye. Your last check will be wired to you by tomorrow.”

Still without a drop of coffee in my system, I stride down to my office and call security to ensure that Louise and Patrick leave and their team property is collected. Then I call Sherry in HR to pass along the news and ask her to find me a new assistant.

“Geez, I’m sorry,” Sherry says. “I’ll get started on it right now. Do you want to borrow someone else’s assistant in the interim?”

“No, I’m fine for now. Thanks, Sherry.”

I hang up and press my fingertips to my forehead, trying to alleviate one hell of a headache. Then I remember that I’m still without coffee, but I refuse to go into that lounge until it’s been thoroughly sanitized, so I call Ed in janitorial and explain the situation.

He assures me that it’ll be detoxed in no time.

To tide me over, I place a delivery order for Starbucks, and I’ve just started making my way throughmoreemails when there’s a knock on my door.

“I’m busy this morning, so if it’s not an emergency, can we do this later?”

“But I came a long way to see you.”

My blood runs cold, and when I glance up at the doorway and see Felix Winningham III standing on the threshold, I feel faint.

Not in a good way.

“Like I said, I don’t have much time today. What do you want, Felix?”

He clucks his tongue and walks inside my office slowly. “That’s not a very nice way to welcome me, sweetheart. I know it’s been a few months since we last saw each other, but I’m here now.”

“What do you want?” I ask again.

“Well, I spoke with your father this morning. I always did love him, you know.”

Bile rises up in the back of my throat.Thisis why my dad wanted to know if I was here today.

So he could sic Felix on me.

Dad would love nothing more than to see me marry Felix. Therightkind of man.

And by that, he means the right kind of money.
