“Hey, Drew!” he yells, waving.

Drew waves back, and we take our seats once more.

“He’s one hell of a kid,” he says, still watching my boy.

“Yeah.” I nod, feeling better than I have in ages. “He is. You and the team fly out this afternoon for LA, right? For tomorrow’s game?”

“I have about four hours until I have to be at Boeing Field,” he confirms. “Is Caleb the reason that you don’t go to any of the games?”

“Yes. I spend the weekends with my son.” I nod and look over to find him watching me. “But we always watch the games on TV.”

“Caleb would probably enjoy going and sitting in the owner’s box.”

“He asks every weekend if we can go,” I confirm. “And I know that I won’t be able to tell him no forever. But for now, I like keeping him out of that spotlight.”

“I get it,” he says, and I can tell by his tone that he means it. “My uncle Luke was adamant about keeping his kids out of the public eye.”

“And who’s Luke?”

“Williams.” He watches me for a second and then grins. “Luke Williams. The movie star, producer, production company owner.”

“Oh,thatLuke Williams. Wow. He’s your uncle?”

“Yeah. We’re a family full of celebrities. Anyway, he had the same stance as you, and they all turned out great.”

“Good.” The whistle blows, signaling the end of the match. “Do you want to join us for lunch before you leave for LA?”

“Hell yes, I do.”

“Ms. Ambrose, this is your new assistant, Lucy Williams.” Sherry has just stepped inside my office and gestures for Lucy to join her.

I smile at the younger woman, already approving of her sharp pink suit and the way she’s styled and put together. Lucy smiles back at me and walks forward, steady on her heels, and offers me her hand.

“Hello, Ms. Ambrose. It’s a pleasure to meet you. I’m looking forward to working with you.”

“The pleasure is mine.” I glance up at Sherry and give her a nod, signaling that she’s free to go. “I’m going to be showing you around, Lucy. I know that someone from HR would normally do that, but you’ll be working directly for me, so I think it’s best if we start together right away.”

“Sounds good to me,” Lucy assures me. “I’m eager to get started.”

“Let’s jump right in, then, and start with your desk area.” I lead her out of my office to the desk on the other side of the door. “This is your home base. I also have a new iPhone here for you, with my number, all the coaches’ numbers, and a few other key people in the contacts. You’re welcome to use this phone for personal use if you want to, as I ask that you keep it on you at all times.”

“You don’t want me to simply use my own personal phone?”

“No. I’d rather you had a company phone. You can stow your handbag and coat here before we move on.”

We start our tour on this floor, and I show her the lounge, introduce her to everyone in each and every office, and then we make our way to Will Montgomery’s office.

“Will?” I knock on his door, and he looks up with a smile. “I’d like to introduce you to my new assistant.”

“Great.” Will nods politely, and then his eyes widen. “Lucy? What the hell are you doing here?”

He rises from behind the desk and hurries over to wrap up Lucy in his arms, giving her a tight hug.

“Uh, hi, Uncle Will.” She winces and looks at me like, please don’t fire me.

“Uncle?” I raise an eyebrow at Will as he backs away.

“Yeah, Lucy’s my niece. Why didn’t you tell me you wanted to work for the team?” He frowns down at his niece, who now has her eyes closed. “I could have put in a good word for you.”
