Lola narrowed her gaze at Fortune. “You better hope she does,” she said, before turning away and following Carmen out of the craziest moment of her life.

CHAPTER16

Lola was still buzzingwith so much anger that she hadn’t realized she’d followed Carmen to her SUV until they were walking toward it. She hadn’t brought her stuff with her. This wasn’t even her floor. Why had she gotten off the elevator? Her mind was a jumble. The last hour had been such a confusing, unpredictable mess.

“We should call a truce,” Carmen said while opening her driver’s side door and tossing her bag inside.

The scent of the leather seats and tiny glass vile of lavender oil wafted toward her. The memory of knocking down her backseats and sprawling out in the back was the only thing her brain could process clearly.

“What?” Lola snapped to cover the weakness invading her knees.

Carmen leaned against the side of her car, arms crossed, in a manner too reminiscent of last December. “I want to be as far away from you as humanly possible,” she said from behind full lips and distant hazel eyes. “No more pulling shit on each other. As a matter of fact, I’m going to pretend you don’t exist.”

Despite what she probably thought, Carmen was a terrible liar. “Pretend I don’t exist until you maul me in the elevator.” Lola stepped in closer, unable to resist testing Carmen’s resolve.

As she expected, Perfect Carmen faltered. The muscles in her face softened, her lips parting in invitation. An invitation that Lola hated herself for wanting to accept.

“Is it delusion? Or are you just really good at lying to yourself?” Carmen’s voice was too low, too soft. Too much like fingertips running up the inside of Lola’s thigh. Carmen leaned in, a breath away from Lola’s lips. “You kissed me first.”

“Lawyers and their half-truths.” Lola tried to smirk, but her lips wouldn’t move. They were too intent on meeting Carmen’s. On tasting her again. Just one more time and she’d get her out of her system. “You goaded me into it. That’s what you like to do, right? Provoke in your quiet little ways so you can claim innocence later.”

Carmen made a sound in her throat. A rumbling growl Lola felt in her body more than she heard it. It called down the electrical storm they couldn’t shake. The yearning that made Lola do such stupid things.

“You think that’s what I want to be?” Carmen’s whisper was against the shell of Lola’s ear before she’d processed her movements, her senses all held captive by Carmen’s proximity. “Innocent?”

The word was so loaded with filthy promises. They both knew there was nothinginnocentabout her. During their first romp in the back of her car, Carmen unleashed dirty talk so hot Lola still thought about it when she was alone in her bed.

Lola slid her hand over Carmen’s hip with every intention of nudging her backward, but she gripped her hard and pulled her close instead. “I think you likeplayingthe good girl.” She pressed her against the car. “Always ready to blame someone else for making you do things.” She brushed her lips against Carmen’s jaw. “But I see you, Carmen.”

“Don’t blame me because you have no self-control,” Carmen taunted, knowing what buttons to push.

Carmen’s hands sliding over her back and down her ass didn’t match her words. Lola wanted to call her a hypocrite, to win, but not as much as she wanted to throw Carmen into the backseat and make her moan.

Lola scraped the nape of Carmen’s neck with her fingers before making a fist and holding her mouth so close to hers, she brushed her lips against her when she spoke. “What are you trying to do right now?”

“Say goodbye forever,” Carmen whispered, straining against the fist in her hair as if daring Lola to pull it tighter.

Heat thrummed through Lola’s body, fighting off the pride that didn’t stand a chance against lust. Gritting her teeth, Lola engaged superhuman strength to resist her own desires.

“Bye, then.” Lola let go of Carmen’s hair and took a step back.

She didn’t finish turning away from Carmen before her hand was on her wrist. Tugging on Lola, Carmen pulled her back. Lola’s legs moved of their own volition. Her body constantly betrayed her, and her mind was only a moment behind.

“Shut the fuck up and kiss me,” Carmen demanded.

“So you can say I kissed you first and tell yourself—”

Carmen’s lips were on hers before she could finish her thought. Soft and warm and insistent, she all but disintegrated beneath Carmen’s kiss. By magic, she felt the kiss on every inch of her skin. Imagining her mouth and hands claiming her in every possible way.

Pinning her against the car, Lola took control, kissing her harder. Finding her thin leather belt and wrestling with the clasp, she needed to feel her again. To sharpen the edges of her memory. To take the feel of her body with her.

Cursing, Carmen tossed her head back, exposing her throat. Lola couldn’t resist. She kissed her neck hard, wishing she could do the same to the rest of her. Wishing they could have a damn bed for once.

“Touch me,” Carmen sighed. A soft sound that multiplied the desire already growing slick and painful. “Please.”

Lola was helpless at the sound of the plea. It was so heavy with lust that Lola couldn’t help but give in. She’d give Carmen anything. Everything. If she just stayed in this place. If she could have her like this in all its simple delight.

The electric beep of a distant car unlocking echoed in the parking garage, sending Lola stumbling back and away from Carmen. Carmen who was breathless, lips swollen and hair messy and so fucking hot that it was almost unfair.
