“Do you know what Fred West did to Lynda Gough, Deaks?” Shenton sneers.

“Shut up,” Noah whispers.

“He tied her up. Suspended her from wooden holes drilled in the ceiling of his cellar.”

“Shut up, Shenton—”

“Almost entirely wrapped her jaw in tape to stop her from screaming—”

“Shut up.” Noah closes his eyes, puts his hands over his ears. He can’t help but imagine Cara. He sees her eyes, her body, her blood.

Shenton leans forward, pushing his face next to Noah’s. “Cut off her fingers and toes while she was still alive. Raped her, beat her, strangled her …”

“Shut up shut up shut up,” Noah shouts, angrily pushing Shenton away.

Toby laughs. “And I know what you’re thinking,” he says.

Noah glares at him. “What?”

“That you could tell your beloved Cara all about me. That she’ll arrest me, and then everything’ll be fine. But that won’t work, Noah.” He pauses, leaning back in his chair. “You know how easily I make friends. And there will be no shortage of new ones in prison.” He idly taps his fingers on the table. “Maybe I won’t stop at Cara. Maybe I’ll get one of my new mates to have a go at those lovely children of hers. Not my kink, but some men get a real thrill from fucking the kids.”

Noah feels sick. He knows Shenton’s right. He can feel the chill as sweat slowly trickles down his spine.

“How?” Noah says quietly.

“Hang yourself with your bed sheets like Shipman; piss someone off and get stabbed like Dahmer. Pick one. I don’t care, Noah. But do it. And do it fast. I’ll be watching.” Shenton stands up. “I own you, you pathetic piece of shit. Don’t ever forget it.”

Shenton leaves, closing the door behind him.

Noah’s whole body starts to shake. His stomach rolls and he vomits on the floor of the interview room.

He knows how dangerous Shenton is. He saw the tortured woman, electrocuted in the bottom of the pit. Lauren, hanging from that tree. He saw Libby dead. He listened as Toby raped Mia, crying out for anyone to help her. And he did nothing.

But he won’t let it happen to Cara.

Shenton was right; the power belongs to him. Ever since that day in the forest, ever since the first kill. His life was in Shenton’s hands. His fate is clear.

He stands up, banging on the door of the interview room. Again and again, until his fists are raw.

“Get me out of here,” he shouts. “Take me back to my cell. Take me back now.”

He starts to cry, slumping down in the corner of the interview room, knees up to his chest, fists bunched, arms covering his face. Shenton comes back into the room, Cara hesitant behind him.

Shenton looks down, then crouches to his side.

“Don’t worry,” DC Toby Shenton says with a smile. He puts his hand on Noah’s shoulder and squeezes it, tightly. “It’ll be over soon, Deakin. It’ll be over soon.”
