“Two very specific ways of killing,” Jess says. “Give me your phone.”

Griffin unlocks it and hands it over. He looks over Jess’s shoulder as she enters words into the search engine. Then he stands up straight, looking from the board back to the phone, still in Jess’s hand.

Jess points to one of the groupings. “Where did these murders take place?” she asks.

“Both Leeds,” Griffin starts. “Isabelle Richards was Roundhay Park.”

“Yorkshire,” Jess says. She looks at Griffin. “Both prostitutes.”

Griffin’s mouth drops open. “Sutcliffe,” he says slowly. “So this group …” he starts, pointing to the first murders.

“The Hillside Strangler,” Jess replies.

Griffin shakes his head. “It must be coincidence,” he says, almost to himself. “And what about yesterday?” he asks. “That was completely different again.”

Jess’s face is grim. “A pregnant woman? Five violent murders in a house?”

“Fuck me,” Griffin mutters.

“Manson,” Jess finishes for him.

The revelation makes Griffin take a step back. His face is gray. He looks stunned, almost in shock.

“They’re all MOs of different serial killers,” Griffin says, articulating out loud what Jess is thinking.

She nods slowly. “The sick fucker is copying serial killers,” she whispers.
