Findings

I attended “The Beeches,” Gloucester Road on Sunday, November 19, 1995, with my colleague Steph Stoddart. Also present were DCI Frank Langston and DS David Shepherd.

The address is a three-bedroom detached house. The house itself is generally clean and tidy with no obvious signs of a large-scale disturbance. The front door opens into a hallway, with a door leading to the living room to the left, the kitchen at the end of the hallway, and the stairs on the right. Upstairs, there are three bedrooms and a bathroom, all accessed from a landing area.

No obvious visible bloodstaining was noted in any of the rooms upstairs or downstairs in the property.

A backdoor from the kitchen leads out into a large garden, approximately two acres in size. An untended grass lawn opens out to a small overgrown wooded area. An old, broken child’s playhouse is to the left, at the beginning of the garden.

The house and grounds are surrounded by woodland on all sides. The nearest residence is approximately half a mile away and cannot be seen or accessed from the property.

A large single-story outbuilding/shed is located at the end of the garden. It is of concrete construction with a flat roof. It has two windows, but both are boarded up from the outside.

The door to the outbuilding has several locks, including two bolt and one Yale key lock. On arrival at the scene, all appeared intact, but unlocked. The main door opens into a small hallway, and another door, secured with two bolt locks. This door leads to one main room, approximately 9 by 6 meters.

A number of scratches are ingrained on the wooden frame next to the door. These appear to have been made recently and resemble the Roman numerals from eighteen to twenty (XVIII, XIX, and XX.) These are arranged vertically, with twenty at the top and eighteen at the bottom.

The room was dark and generally untidy. Debris, including plates of apparently uneaten food, plastic water bottles, food wrappers, and soiled toilet paper were evident. There was one bucket to the back left corner of the building, appearing to have been used as a toilet, containing apparent fecal material, urine, and toilet paper. Another bucket was on the other side of the room, containing water, possibly from the outside water butt. This butt is fed from guttering on the outside of the building.

Two double-bed-sized mattresses were on the floor, with bloodstained bedding on top. One deceased female, covered with bedding, was found on one of the mattresses. I understand that another female has been seen by paramedics and taken to hospital prior to our arrival. Paramedic paraphernalia was next to the mattress where the injured parties were found.

Extensive bloodstaining was noted in this room, mainly in the form of contact bloodstaining and drips of the blood on the mattresses and bedding, indicating that an injured person or persons have been in this area for some time. Blood pooling was evident across the floor. Areas of damage were noted to the internal side of the door, together with further areas of apparent bloodstaining within the damage.

Three large metal cages stood along the back wall, varying in sizes from 120 x 80 x 80 cm, to the smallest at 90 x 60 x 60 cm. Apart from a bloodstained blanket in one, all were empty. Contact bloodstaining was found on the metal bars, as well as clumps of hair together with some apparent skin and brain matter. All doors were open, with padlocks left on the latches. Bloodstaining in the form of impact spatter was found in all three of the cages, on the floors and extending up the walls to the ceiling. The pattern of bloodstaining indicates that an individual or individuals have been subject to assault within these cages.

The ceiling has one large structural wooden beam running the length of the room. Two large metal hooks are drilled into the beam.
