“Lacy?” I stumble from the bedroom, taking note of all the damage—the potential goddamn danger—and realize, I’m already failing her.

Failing them both.

“Lacy.” The boom of my voice echoes in the small space.

“Hush, will you?” Bleary-eyed and grumpy-looking, she turns from the kitchen sink with a glass of water in hand. “I heard you the first time.”

I scan her from the messy pile of hair atop her head to the soft blue polish accenting her toes.Still fucking exquisite. “Everything okay?”

“Fine,” she says, but the tight line across her brow makes me doubt it’s the truth.

“I expected to find you in bed with me this morning.” I’m testing, maybe even pushing her boundaries a little. “Or better yet, hustling to move your things to my place, so we can stay in my bed for as long as we fucking want.”

She coughs and sputters on the water she’s sipping. “Pardon me? Did you really just ask me to move in with you?”

“Yes, but I’m not asking. You can’t stay here, Lace. This place isn’t good enough for you. It’s not safe.”

“Are you out of your mind?” Anger—or is that excitement—flashes in her gaze. “We barely know each other. Heck, I don’t even know if I like you.”

“I’d say we know each other pretty fucking well, and your pussy likes me a helluva lot.”

Now there’s no mistaking—the look on her face is one of fury. Yet, I can tell from the way her thighs are squeezing together, my crass words have turned her on.

My dick starts rising from just the thought.

“Now you’re really overstepping, and moving way too fast.” She sets the glass on the counter behind her, and on sleek, supple legs, glides toward me.

An edge of restless hunger stirs within me.

“Besides,”–her voice is calm and inviting—“Chastity’s already tried to make trouble with me. I don’t feel like getting poked by that cactus again.”

“What did she do? And why the hell didn’t you tell me sooner?”

There’s a glint of mischief in her gaze, and her mouth quirks at one side. “When was I supposed to tell you? Between orgasms?”

Fucking hell. “If you’re not careful, I’m going to kiss the sass right off your perfect lips.” How does she get me so riled up so easily?

“Promises, promises.”

“Lace,” I growl, fighting hard to keep my cool, “tell me what she did.”

“She didn’t do anything, really.” Her heavy sigh washes over me. “Just called me a whore and gave me some BS warning about staying away from you.”

“That little…” My blood’s boiling, but I don’t want to risk turning Lacy off, not when it’s so obvious I’ve got her turned on. “I’ll talk to her.”

“No need. She isn’t a problem I’m worried about. She was just sizing me up…maybe trying to mark her territory…but other than lame threats, she’s got no real bite. Besides, I don’t need you to fight my battles.”

My chest burns and heart pounds. “How’s it your battle? She wouldn’t even be in your life if it weren’t for me. It’s my mess; I’ll deal with it. End of discussion.”

“Your mess?” She takes a step back, lines worrying her brow, and braces herself against the kitchen counter. “Is that how you think of this? Of the baby? A mess?”

A hard growl rips from my throat, and I stalk toward her, securing her in a firm hold. “Fuck no. How could you even think that?”

She shakes her head but doesn’t answer.

“You are not a burden.” Frustration and a touch of anger simmer within me, but still, I’m turned on. “And I’ll always take care of what is mine.”

“Just promise you’ll leave her alone,” she says with a sigh.
