While Ridge attempts to grill the poor woman for details she isn’t going to offer, I leave her to fend for herself. Once done, I return to the room where Doctor Anderson ambles in after me.

“Hello, Lacy. Oh.” He stops short of closing the exam door to stare the man pacing the small room. “Ridge, nice to see you.”

The doctor holds out his hand and the men exchange pleasantries, though Ridge cuts it short, not stopping to breathe, before stating arrogantly, “Doc, Brenda was competent and all, but she wouldn’t answer any of my questions.”

“In fairness to Brenda, that’s what I’m here for. What do you want to know?” The doctor holds up a hand and eases over to a tall stool. “Or before that, do you want to hear what I have to say? It might answer some of your questions.”

This is why I chose him. He has a way of taking control and putting even the likes of Ridge in his place without coming off rude or domineering. Ridge waves at the doctor to proceed.

“Well, Lacy, you’re right where we thought you’d be in terms of gestation.”

“What does that mean?” Ridge can’t keep his mouth shut and I snort, which gains me a sharp, challenging gaze from him, as if to say “What? You want to know as much as I do.”

He’s right. I can’t fault him for wanting to know everything about the baby.

“It means everything looks great. The fetus is growing and developing as it should, and there’s no need to alter your due date. You’re still tracking for early April. And how are you feeling, Lacy?”

“I’m good. Tired and growing.” I chuckle and rub my stomach.

“Well, you look great, and your baby is doing great. Do you want to know the gender?” He looks from me to Ridge, and I wish we’d had a chance to talk before the doctor came in.

I open my mouth to respond but Ridge says, “No. As long as the baby’s healthy, which is what it sounds like you’re saying”—he pauses, eyes pinning the doctor to the spot until he nods—“then we don’t need to know the gender.” Ridge looks at me and smiles. “It’ll be a surprise.”

I’m sure that’s the expression on my face right now. Surprise. I close my gaping mouth, not sure what happened while I was in the bathroom or why he changed his mind.

We spend a few more minutes with the doctor, then he hands us two printouts of the baby and leaves us. Ridge stares down at the black-and-white photo for far too long and I wonder what he’s thinking.

“You okay?”

He snaps his head up to look at me. “What?”

“You’ve been silent and staring at the picture for quite a while. Is everything okay?”

“Absolutely.” He carefully tucks the picture into his back pocket and snakes an arm around my waist. “Everything’s perfect.”

He kisses my forehead and I stare up at him. “How come you changed your mind about knowing the gender?”

I don’t bother adding my fear of his potential want for a son. Isn’t that what a Kincaide would want? Someone to carry on their name?

“You know me. I like to control things.” My laughter bubbles from me at his admission and he chuckles. “All right. Enough of that.” His finger bops the tip of my nose playfully. “I thought it would be good to know what we were having so we could plan. You know, get clothes now, decorate the nursery and all that, but…”

His pause, long and thoughtful, makes me hold my breath in anticipation of his next words. “Fuck planning. I meant what I said. All that matters is that the baby is healthy, and Lace, our baby is. And beautiful and magnificent.”

“But of course—he or she is a Kincaide.” It’s a joke and I hold no resentment in my words.

Ridge doesn’t take any offense, only nods and, tightening his grip on me, shifts so we’re chest to chest. “Fuck, Lace, when that woman slid that phallic thing down, almost in between your legs.” A dark cloud blankets his features for a beat. “I was ready to snap the thing in two if it went anywhere near your pussy.”

I throw my head back in laughter, completely surprised by his revelation. “No. Really?”

He presses his nose to mine and rumbles, “Only I’m going in there.” His hips thrust against my body, causing his hardening erection to poke my taut belly.

My thighs rub together and I’m suddenly hot and needy. Nope, we’re not doing anything here, not in the doctor’s office—the rental we looked at a few weeks ago was bad enough. My raging libido will have to chill.

I try to step back, but he isn’t allowing any distance between us. “Uh, Ridge, the baby has to come out that way, too, you know.”

“Ah…” He glances at the closed door then back to me, his heated gaze, so like a hot blue flame, scorching. “That I’ll allow, but no one else. Speaking of which, my cock needs in there now.”

His lips find mine, burning me once more with a searing kiss. A promise of what’s to come.
