His eyes meet mine once again. “I know that I should wait for my soulmate. She’ll probably be disappointed that I didn’t save my first kiss for her. But I don’t care, Henley. I want you to be my first kiss.”

My heart races faster.

“Tell me you want the same thing.” He leans closer. “Because I won’t take it from you without your permission. You probably have some guy out there waiting for you.”

I shake my head. “Parker, there is no way that I could ever have feelings for another guy that are this strong. Soulmate or not, you’re it for me. I want you to kiss me. So, if you’re waiting for permission, don’t wait any longer. You have it.”

Parker doesn’t waste any time after my admission. He just leans forward and kisses me. It’s soft and gentle. I sigh, leaning closer to him. He puts his hand around my waist and pulls me even closer. With one hand, he laces our fingers together. With the other, he puts his on the small of my back. I shiver at his touch.

I put my free hand on his bicep. His lips are so soft, but his arms are hard and muscular.

Parker is everything I could want and more.

I hear shuffling in the leaves behind us. Parker and I both pull back just in time to see Will step into the clearing. His eyes are narrowed at us both. I expect him to rush toward us and demand us to separate, but he doesn’t. He just walks back into the trees, giving us privacy.

I turn to look at Parker and my stomach sinks when I see his expression. His head is turned away and he’s avoiding eye contact. He clenches a fist at his chest as he frowns.

Finally, his eyes meet mine, but they’re missing the spark that is usually there. “Henley, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that.” He shakes his head. “This can’t happen.”

Tears well up in my eyes.

“I’ll take you home.”

I shake my head, pushing myself off the ground. “Don’t bother. I’ll find my own way home.”

He objects, but I’ve already turned and am running through the trees. I nearly run into Will as I try to find the path. He looks at me and opens his mouth to say something, but abruptly stops when a tear rolls down my cheek.

“Henley,” he says.

But I don’t stop to listen. Instead, I run.

I will myself to teleport home, but nothing happens.

Why do my powers not work when I need them to?

It’s hard to run and cry at the same time, but I don’t stop. I can hear two sets of footsteps chasing me. I know that they’re fast—faster than I am. If I slow down for a split second, they will catch me.

I try to find the path, but I must’ve taken a wrong turn. There is no path. I just keep running through the trees, dunking under limbs.

A crack of thunder fills the air moments before it begins to pour down rain.

Great—just what I needed.

“Henley!” I hear.

But I ignore it, running a little faster as I spot a break in the trees. I run through, seeing a winding two lane road. As my feet hit the pavement, I hear a loud screeching sound. I look up, just in time to see a semi truck coming right toward me. It’s too late to do anything, so I brace for impact.

I’ll never fit in.

I dream of pain. Agonizing pain, followed by darkness. In the darkness, I see a light. The light gets brighter and brighter until it completely consumes me. I smell the smoke, see the flames, and feel the ashes beneath my feet.

Then, there is nothing.

Just peace.

I wonder if I’m dead. But if I were, would I still be thinking? Would I be dreaming? I’m vaguely aware that somebody is touching me. Somebody is holding me—carrying me. I want to open my eyes and see who it is, but I’m just so tired. I can’t do it yet.
